What is an Internship?

Internships provide students with the opportunity to integrate academic learning with practical work experience in a professional environment. These opportunities are expected to be structured, real-world experiences in which students are mentored by an on-site supervisor.

If the internship is for academic credit, students will be evaluated by their site supervisor and their faculty supervisor (faculty of record for the internship course). Additional information about internships for academic credit is provided further down this page.

The C2Hub is here to support students by providing resources; however, students are responsible for finding their own internship opportunities. The C2Hub does not secure internship placements for students.

Internships Can Be:

  • full-time or part-time
  • completed at public, private, non-profit, or government organizations
  • completed in-person, online, or in a hybrid setting
  • paid or unpaid*
  • completed for academic credit or not for academic credit

*Unpaid internships should be completed for academic credit in order to provide the student with worker’s compensation coverage

International students should also review this additional information from the Registrar’s office before accepting any internship offers.

Internships for Academic Credit

Encourage Students to Plan Ahead!

Applying for an internship and submitting an application for academic credit are two separate (but related) processes.

Successfully registering for an internship for academic credit takes a lot of pre-planning. We recommend having students carefully review the How to Get Academic Credit for Your Internship website before starting their internship for credit search, to make sure they are aware of all requirements.
