It is the responsibility of the student to connect with their academic advisor and/or academic programs to determine the correct number of credits to register for, and to ensure that the registered credits will count towards their major or minor requirements.
Know Your Deadlines!
It is very important to be aware of your academic department’s submission deadlines. If you have questions about your deadline, reach out to your academic department.
Common deadlines include (but are not limited to) the first day of the semester, the first week of the semester, and the census date. All of these dates can be referenced on MSU Denver’s Academic Calendar.

Internship for Academic Credit Policies
Every program has their own guidelines that students must meet in order to be able to earn academic credit for an internship, however there are some policies that apply to every internship for academic credit.
- Students must have a declared major, minor, or certificate that is associated with internship course they wish to register fore
- In the case that an academic department does not offer a specific internship course, UC 3980 – Internship can be taken for academic credit.
- IDP students should discuss internship options with their academic advisor
- Internships for credit can be paid or unpaid
- It is highly recommended that all unpaid internships are done for academic credit in order to provide worker’s compensation coverage
- Paid internships can be done for credit, but this is not required
- Unless your major-specific information states otherwise, the internship course is offered every semester
- Unless your major-specific information states otherwise, 1 credit = 45 work hours; 3 credits = 135 work hours
- During the fall or spring semester, 135 work hours can be achieved by working an average of 10 hours per week
- During the summer, 135 work hours can be achieved by working an average of 14 hours per week
To ensure academic integrity and compliance with federal financial aid regulations, the following rules apply to the timing of internship work and course registration for academic credit:
- Length of Internship: All work for a for-credit internship course must be completed within a single academic term (e.g., semester or part of term), not exceeding 21 weeks in total.
- Start and End Dates: Internship work hours may begin after the conclusion of the previous full term/semester (including any official break or intersession period) and must end no later than the last official day of the term in which the student is registered for internship credit. Hours worked prior to the end of the previous term or after the end of the registered term are not eligible for academic credit.
- Registration Timing: Students must be enrolled in the internship course during the same term in which the internship work occurs (including intersession periods).
- Retroactive registration or credit for work conducted during a prior full term is not permitted.
- Students may request, but are not guaranteed, formal late enrollment approval within the same term
- When an internship continues beyond the end of a semester, students must register for internship credit again in the next academic term to earn credit for the work completed during that period.
This policy applies to all for-credit internships, regardless of whether they are paid or unpaid.

IDP students have several options for internships.
- If you are working on an IDP major or minor with a department that allows non-majors/minors to register for internship credits, you are welcome to complete your internship through that department. For example, the Department of Aviation and Aerospace Science allows IDP students to register for AES 3980: Internship.
- To apply for an internship for credit with an academic department, find the associated major on this page and follow the instructions there.
- If you are working on an IDP major or minor and none of the departments you are working with allow you to register for their internship and/or field experiences, you can take UC 3980 – Internship. Additional Information about UC 3980 – Internship is below.
