Getting Started

Before you start looking for an internship (or before you accept an offer), it is important to be aware of the requirements your internship will need to meet in order to be eligible for academic credit. If seeking credit, you will want to carefully review the information below before starting your internship search.

Be Prepared!

Carefully read through the steps below before applying for your internship for academic credit.

  • Review your degree progress report to confirm that there is room for an internship within your graduation requirements. Meet with your academic advisor if you are unsure.

  • Review the requirements for a for-credit internship in your major and meet with your academic department if you have any questions.
  • Follow the steps below to review requirements for an internship for academic credit in your major:
    1. Log in to Career Link
    2. In the upper right corner of the screen, click “Resources”, and then “Resource Library”
    3. On the next page, click “Category,” select “Credit Policy Sheets,” and then click “Apply”
    4. Click on your academic department to review the guidelines
  • Start thinking about what you want to accomplish in your internship. This lays the groundwork for the Learning Objective part of your application.

Terms to Know

Internship Supervisor – the person who will be supervising you at your internship site

 

Faculty Supervisor (or Supervising Professor) – the MSU Denver faculty member who will be overseeing the internship course and connecting with you throughout the semester; the faculty supervisor will assign your final grade

 

Faculty Approver – the professor in your department who reviews your internship application (depending on your major, this person might also be your faculty supervisor)

 

Learning Objectives – a statement explaining what you want to accomplish at your internship, and how you plan to accomplish those goals

How to Register for Your Internship Course

After everyone has approved the application, you receive an email explaining how to register for the credit. Depending on your major, you will either register yourself, or you will be registered by your department. 

IMPORTANT REGISTRATION INFORMATION

After you are registered, BE SURE TO DOUBLE CHECK that you are registered for the correct number of credits.

Your registered internship credits MUST MATCH the credits approved in your internship for academic credit application. If you need help with this, email us at [email protected].

Complete These Steps at the End of Your Internship

  1. Complete your self-evaluation in Career Link
    • Tip: Some academic departments use a different evaluation form than the one available in Career Link. Review your department’s requirements to ensure you fill out the correct form.
  2. Remind your onsite supervisor that they will also receive an evaluation to complete, and the link to complete the form will come from [email protected].
  3. Update your resume! Be sure to include your internship, including projects you worked on and new skills that you developed. Click here to review information on how to write and update your resume.
