Graduate Teaching Assistant (G-TA) Program
The Graduate Teaching Assistant (G-TA) Program facilitates opportunities for graduate students to participate in teaching and activities that support students and the faculty instructor. This is a part-time position. Graduate Teaching Assistants (G-TAs) selected to participate in the G-TA Program will earn $1,800 for a full semester’s work (i.e. approximately 100 hours in total) for supporting one or more classes/courses.
The G-TA must be able to function in a fast-paced, demanding educational environment. The ideal candidate is someone who pays attention to detail, is thorough, organized, a quick-learner, works independently with little supervision, can make sound decisions, and is committed to supporting the mission and values of the Department of Social Work.
Students must apply to the position in order to be added to the TA Pool. When openings become available, qualified students will be matched with faculty needing support and fit with experience, schedule, knowledge and the project.

More Information About the G-TA Role
Graduate TA Responsibilities may include the following:
- Work under the direction of one or more faculty members.
- Understand the course(s) objectives and content.
- Identify and analyze materials and literature relevant to course(s).
- Assist in the gathering of resources related to the course(s).
- Prepare materials for courses.
- Assist in the evaluation of student work.
- Assist in the preparation of lectures, test materials, and test preparation materials.
- Lead course discussion.
- Provide individual and group support to students.
- Provide support to the course in Canvas.
- Hold office hours.
- Current MSU Denver graduate student in good standing in their department; or,
- Current MSU Denver Master of Social Work (MSW) student in good standing in the program and department; or,
- A graduate of MSU Denver’s MSW Program may be considered for a position on a case by case basis. Must have remained in good standing throughout their tenure in the program.
Note: students may not G-TA for a course they are currently taking or will take in the future.
- Working knowledge of Canvas, Teams, and Zoom.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Research Assistant Program
The Research Assistant (RA) Program facilitates opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to participate in faculty/administrator research, scholarly, and creative endeavors. Work may include preparation of research materials, analysis of data, literature review, conference preparation, or other similar tasks associated with academic scholarship.
The RA must be able to function in a fast-paced, demanding educational environment. The ideal candidate is someone who pays attention to detail, is thorough, organized, a quick-learner, works independently with little supervision, can make sound decisions, and is committed to supporting the mission and values of the Department of Social Work and MSU Denver.

More Information About the RA Role
- Work under the direction of one or more faculty/administrative members assisting them with current research, scholarly or creative projects.
- Identify and analyze literature relevant to the projects undertaken.
- Prepare materials for research studies.
- Assist in the gathering of data related to projects assigned, which may include but is not limited to conducting interviews, and pulling, organizing, and/or entering data.
- Assist in the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data.
- Assist in the preparation of drafts of reports of projects.
- Current Master of Social Work Student or senior Bachelor of Science in Social Work Student in good standing.
- Previous research experience
- Proficiency with APA, MS Word, MS Excel
- Familiarity with SPSS or equivalent quantitative analysis software

Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (U-TA) Program
Social workers engage in both learning and teaching across their professional career. In our roles as social work educators, we recognize the many strengths that our students bring to our courses and wish to provide additional opportunities for students to extend the breadth and depth of their social work skillset. With this in mind, we provide students additional opportunities to demonstrate leadership and substantive expertise. Being an undergraduate teaching assistant (U-TA) can be an important learning experience. It gives students the opportunity to see the process of teaching from the teacher’s perspective, provides the opportunity to begin to learn how to teach, and requires that the course material be learned in-depth (as there is no better way to learn something than to teach it). Additional benefits for students include opportunities for professional development, praxis experience, leadership development, and advancing your interests in graduate school. Benefits to the instructor can include hands-on help with students and course materials.
This webpage outlines the qualifications required of students who are interested in serving in this role, the process that students will engage in to work with a Department of Social Work faculty member as an undergraduate TA, and the expectations for students and faculty participating in the teaching assistantship program.
More Information About the U-TA Program
- Must have already taken the course for which they will be serving as a U-TA with a grade of B or better in the course; and
- Must have demonstrated record of outstanding academic performance within Social Work classes, as evidenced by a recommendation from a Social Work faculty member; and
- Must sign up for the 3 credit U-TA course (SPS 4500) that will provide student’s support for their work. Students will send their name and 900 number to the faculty member with whom they will be working to facilitate course enrollment. This course will substitute for an upper-division social work elective. This course will introduce additional information about teaching, provide additional support for U-TAs, and enable greater engagement in teaching and learning in social work. - Must have availability congruent with the course for which they will be serving as a U-TA.
Undergraduate Teaching Assistants may be identified in a number of ways. A primary way is that faculty teaching a Social Work course may identify an exemplary student and invite them to consider applying to serve as a U-TA with them in the future. Students may also indicate their interest in serving as a U-TA by speaking directly with a faculty member that they are interested in working with OR by emailing the BSSW Program Director, Barbara Decker, at [email protected].
Once a connection has been made between a student with interest in serving as a U-TA and a faculty member interested in working with a U-TA in an upcoming class, the faculty member will conduct an interview with the student to assess their readiness to step into this important role and to make sure the student meets the U-TA qualifications. Once the faculty has interviewed all qualified students, the faculty member will offer the U-TA position to selected student(s). If the student accepts this position:
- The student will send the faculty member with whom they will be working their 900# so that they can be registered for the U-TA course.
- The student and faculty will meet to complete the U-TA contract and plan their work together. The U-TA Contract can be found here: SWK U-TA Contract

- Meet with the BSSW Program Director once over the semester to discuss their experiences as a U-TA.
Welcome Desk Ambassador (WDA)
Are you outgoing, energetic, and love to help others? The Welcome Desk Ambassador in the Department of Social Work serves as a liaison to students, faculty, and community members by connecting them with departmental and campus resources, and providing support.
The Welcome Desk Ambassador is often the point of contact and first-person students, faculty, and community members will meet when they engage with the Department of Social Work. Therefore, the Welcome Desk Ambassador is someone who is helpful, detail-oriented, energetic, and passionate about being a Roadrunner. The Welcome Desk Ambassadors serve an important role in helping students develop a sense of belonging at MSU Denver and are an essential part of the Department of Social Work team by providing important support services.
This is a part-time position with opportunity year-round. Pay begins at $18.81/hour.

More Information About the WDA Role
The responsibilities of this position may change and develop over time, but will include one or more of the following:
General Advising and Student Services Support:
- Will utilize the department advising materials and knowledge to provide introductory advising information to students, to include supporting students with navigating and accessing campus resources.
- Participate in peer advising/mentoring program.
- Provide support and participate in departmental events such as Fall Assembly, MSW Pinning and Hooding Ceremony, Honors Night, BSSW Senior Celebration, and more.
Office Reception & Administrative Support
- Greets students, faculty, staff and all department visitors with highest qualities of customer service. Assists them with directions and general questions about the university.
- Schedules appointments for faculty and staff, and when appointees arrive, notifies faculty and staff that their appointment has arrived.
- Answers the office phone and provides information and/or directs the call to the appropriate person.
- Restocks office supplies and break room supplies.
- Runs errands to campus offices including Student Success, Administration Building, the Bookstore and the Tivoli.
Special Projects:
- As requested, will work with faculty and staff on a variety of special projects such as compiling documents and spreadsheets, building packets, mailing books, and coordinating events.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access).
- Familiarity with office equipment (fax, printer, phones, etc.).
- Positive attitude, demonstrates flexibility, and is a team player.
- Good organizational and multi-tasking abilities.
- Problem-solving skills.
- Excellent customer service and people skills a must!

Online Learning Student Assistant
Are you organized, communicative and enjoy working with educational technology? The Online Learning Student Assistant in the Department of Social Work works with the Online and Hybrid Course Development Analyst to support faculty in online course development through help with data entry on Canvas, making accessible documents, preparing videos to share in class, and other technology-related tasks. The Online Learning Student Assistant is someone who is organized, detail-oriented, communicative, self-motivated, and enjoys working with educational technology.
This is a part-time position with opportunity year-round. Pay starts at $20/hr.
