I’ve been passionate about Just-in-Time Teaching (JiTT) since I first learned about it in the early 2000s. I continue to believe it is one of the most broadly applicable active engagement teaching methods out there, as it complements nearly every teaching method and subject matter.

This year I worked with the Instructional Design Group to create an excellent tutorial on JiTT on the CTLD Ready website.

A brief sales pitch:

  • Just-in-Time Teaching (JiTT) creates powerful feedback loops that make synchronous classes more engaging, effective, and adaptable.
  • JiTT focuses on “sense-making” rather than “point-getting.” Approaches that incorporate this kind of shift can help mitigate challenges posed by generative AI.
  • Despite 25+ years of research across disciplines, JiTT remains underused. In nearly two decades using, studying, and teaching JiTT – even partnering with one of its original inventors – and I’ve seen firsthand how it can transform teaching and learning.

So take a few minutes to explore the JiTT tutorial. It might just change the way you think about pre-class work.
If you have questions or are curious about how JiTT can fit into your course, let’s talk! I’m happy to share ideas and examples.

Generative AI disclosure: Using my own writing about JiTT, such as presentation abstracts, I asked generative AI to write a first draft of this post, as well the “teaser blurb” that went out by email. Want to know more? Send me an email and we can chat!
