MSU Denver

What does it mean to be Accepted with Requirements?

Students are accepted with requirements to the MSW Program at MSU Denver when they have additional obligations to fulfill. This could include, but is not limited to, undergraduate degree completion, prerequisite course completion, low undergraduate GPA, or other items that are not in compliance with program eligibility standards. A student who is accepted with requirements must complete the specified criteria within the first six credit hours of enrollment or, in the case of undergraduate degree completion and prerequisite course completion, prior to the start of MSW Program coursework. Students who do not fulfill their acceptance requirements may be dismissed from the MSW Program. Certain requirements may affect the student’s ability to register – please refer to the criteria of your specific requirement for details.

Completion of Undergraduate Degree

Terms of Requirement

This requirement will be met when an official transcript showing the completion of an undergraduate degree and the date conferred is received by the Office of Graduate Studies. The degree must be completed prior to starting the program and proof of completion must be provided prior to the end of the student’s first term in the MSW Program. If this item is not met per the specified timeline, the student will be dismissed from the Program.

Required Next Steps

  • If you are receiving your undergraduate degree from MSU Denver:
    • The Office of Graduate Studies will verify the conferral of your degree from the internal system. No additional steps are required from the student.
  • If you are receiving your undergraduate degree from a school other than MSU Denver:
    • Upon conferral of the undergraduate degree, submit official transcripts to the Office of Graduate Studies showing the degree has been conferred. Transcripts can be submitted in one of the following methods. Please do not submit any materials to the Office of Admissions at MSU Denver. Failure to submit using one of the options below may result in a delay in processing your transcripts.
      • Submit Transcripts Electronically (Preferred Method): Request official transcripts be sent electronically to [email protected].
      • Submit Transcripts by Mail: Request official transcripts be sent by mail to
        Metropolitan State University of Denver
        Office of Graduate Studies
PO Box 173362, Campus Box 48
        Denver, CO 80217-3362

Upon receiving proof of degree conferral, the Office of Graduate Studies will verify the cumulative undergraduate GPA and, in the case that the GPA is below 3.0, the Department of Social Work may alter your admission decision or requirements.

Important Note About Ordering Transcripts

If you are ordering your transcripts and select to send them to a school, you may be forced to choose from a list of schools and will not be able to enter the [email protected] email or mailing address. If this is the situation, do not select MSU Denver as this will have your materials sent to the MSU Denver Office of Admissions and will delay processing. Instead, you should select to send the transcripts to a third party at which point you should be able to directly enter our information. Sending to a third party and directly entering the email or physical address you want them sent to should be an option at all institutions. We have had transcripts from all schools in Colorado and from schools across the U.S. sent to us via the [email protected] account and Office of Graduate Studies mailing address.

Cumulative Undergraduate GPA under 3.0

Mandatory Prerequisite Requirements

Terms of Requirement

This requirement has generated a registration hold on your student account. The registration hold will be lifted after proof of registration for all missing prerequisites is received by the Office of Social Work Student Services. You do not need to complete all missing prerequisites to have the registration hold lifted from your account, however prerequisites must be completed prior to the start of MSW Program courses in Fall 2022.

The requirement will be met after the student submits official transcripts to demonstrate successful completion (grade of “C” or above or adequate test score) of required prerequisite(s) to [email protected]. This must be completed prior to starting the MSW Program in Fall 2022. Students who are missing one or more mandatory prerequisite at the beginning of the Fall semester may be dismissed from the MSW Program, placed on a revised academic plan, or forced to defer their acceptance.

If you believe a course you have already completed would fulfill a missing prerequisite requirement, please email [email protected] with the institution the course was taken at, the course name and number, a course description, and the prerequisite you believe it should count for. We will review the course description and let you know if it meets our requirements.

Required Next Steps

  • A registration hold has been added to your account. You will not be able to register for MSW Program classes until you have provided proof of registration for each missing prerequisite. Please email proof of registration to [email protected].
  • Provide proof of successful completion to the Office of Social Work Student Services by emailing [email protected] prior to the start of the Fall 2022 semester.

Official Transcripts Required

Terms of Requirement

Students who submit unofficial transcripts for MSW Program admissions are accepted with the “Official Transcripts Required” requirement. This requires that official transcripts from all institutions attended must be received by MSU Denver prior to the end of your first term in the MSW Program (summer for Advanced Standing admits, fall for Regular Program admits).

If official transcripts from all institutions attended are not received prior to the end of your first term, a registration hold will be placed on your account prohibiting registration for future terms until official transcripts are received. You may also face withdrawal from any courses during your second term that you are already registered for.

The Office of Social Work Student Services highly encourages MSW Program students to submit official transcripts from all institutions attended prior to the start of their first term of the MSW Program.

Required Next Steps

Submit official transcripts to the Office of Graduate Studies. Transcripts can be submitted in one of the following methods. Please do not submit any materials to the Office of Admissions at MSU Denver. Failure to submit using one of the options below may result in a delay in processing your transcripts.

If you have any questions about what official transcripts are still required or are currently on file, please email [email protected].

  • Submit Transcripts Electronically (Preferred Method): Request official transcripts be sent electronically to [email protected].
  • Submit Transcripts by Mail: Request official transcripts be sent by mail to
    Metropolitan State University of Denver
