Date Added to Job Board: 9/11/2025
Organization: MSU Denver
Location: Denver, CO
Salary: $18.81 per hour
Position Description:
Research Assistants (RA) will collaborate with a cross-institutional research team to execute a National Science Foundation funded project that examines how sexual orientation shapes intergenerational family relationships (as described in more depth in the project summary). Work may include preparation of research materials, recruitment of participants, conducting community presentations, analyzing qualitative data, conducting qualitative interviews, preparing literature reviews or conference materials, or other similar tasks associated with academic scholarship. The ideal candidate is someone who has strong interest in the content of the research topic, pays attention to detail, is organized, a quick-learner, and works independently with little supervision, and is invested in growing their skills in social research.
Project Summary: Intergenerational family relationships are a salient and critical feature of contemporary family life; yet they can be marked by conflict. The increasing social and political polarization of U.S. society may exacerbate the degree of conflict experienced within families. The proposed project synthesizes three interrelated theories to examine the relationship between macro-level structural factors and micro-level family processes to advance family science. The investigators utilize a case study approach to examine how generationally-informed understandings about sexual orientation shape the intergenerational family relationships of sexual minority individuals. This innovative qualitative research design entails in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 90 participants of diverse generations, family roles, and sexual identities to answer the following research questions: (1) How do sexual minority people from different generational cohorts navigate intergenerational family relationships within a family system? (2) How do heterosexual people from different generational cohorts navigate intergenerational family relationships within a family system? (3) How do contentious social issues shape intergenerational solidarity and social support in family systems?
