Biography

K Scherrer is an Associate Professor and BSSW Program Director in the Department of Social Work and has research and social work practice interests in aging and the life course, GLBTQ sexualities, and family relationships. Her social work practice experiences include work with GLBTQ individuals and their families, women and children who were victims of violence, and older adults and their families. Dr. Scherrer’s research examines how age, generation and cohort shape how individuals recognize themselves as having sexual minority identities and how these identities affect their family life. Most recently, she investigated how family relationships, and grandparent-grandchild relationships in particular, are affected by the discovery of a grandchild’s gay, lesbian bisexual or queer (GLBQ) sexual orientation. Ultimately, her research informs social work practice with intergenerational families, particularly regarding issues of sexuality.

Here at MSU Denver, Dr. Scherrer has taught courses on Privilege, Oppression and Power (BSSW), Introduction to Social Work (BSSW), Cross Cultural Practice (BSSW), Social Work with Women (BSSW), Social Work with Contemporary Gender and Sexuality Issues (BSSW) and Exploring Diversity (MSW). Dr. Scherrer also has teaching experiences with content areas such as foundation level social work practice, advanced clinical practice with older adults, GLBT issues, international social work, group dynamics, aging and gerontological services, program evaluation, and qualitative research.

Dr. Scherrer conducted her undergraduate work at the University of Colorado at Boulder where she received a BA in Sociology and Psychology, and her graduate work at the University of Michigan where she received her PhD in Social Work and Sociology, MSW and MA in Sociology. Dr. Scherrer is licensed as a Clinical Social Worker in the state of Colorado.
