Dr. Larry S. Johnson, Ph.D. is the former director and founder of the Summer Science Institute and the Center for Math, Science, and Environmental Education, a math professor and a former dean of the Metropolitan State College of Denver’s School of Letters, Arts and Sciences.
Dr. Johnson began his career in Mathematics at Western State College, where he earned his B.S. degree in 1964. He earned his M.S. and Ph.D. at the University of Wyoming. Dr. Johnson taught as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Western Illinois University, as an Associate Professor, Chair, Director and Dean at Fort Lewis College, and Professor of Mathematics and Dean of the School of Science and Nursing at Perdue University.
Dr. Johnson came to Metropolitan State College in 1983 and was a Professor of Mathematics, served as Dean of the Former School of Science and Mathematics, and as Dean of the School of Letters, Arts and Sciences. In 1994 he founded the Center for Math, Science, and Environmental Education where he served as Director. Through the Center, Dr. Johnson collaborated with Denver Public Schools, The Colorado Alliance for Science, The National Science Foundation, and Colorado State University to help improve math and science education at the K-12 level, and increase degrees for minority College students. Dr. Johnson was with Metropolitan State University of Denver for 23 years.
Dr. Johnson was a native of Colorado and lived in Westminster, CO with his wife, Sandy Johnson. They were married for over 45 years and have three daughters, one son and seven grandchildren.
