Dr. Francis Su

Dr. Francis Su is the author of “Mathematics for Human Flourishing.”  This book discusses the many ways mathematics can be more than just numbers.  What is particularly interesting about Dr. Su’s book is how it helps many readers reframe their own negative experiences in mathematics.  It shows how everyone can do mathematics, because mathematics goes beyond equations and theorems.  In a very concrete way, Dr. Su helps the reader cognitively reframe their beliefs around math.  Mathematics is framed as a subject that can be explored; it not only changes the world, but it changes the person.  Christopher Jackson is an inmate that corresponds with Dr. Su and their correspondences are included in the book.  Mathematics is framed as something transformative, and this is starkly illustrated by Christopher and his personal journey.  The consistent themes of growth and beauty make the book an excellent choice for the math anxiety workshop run by Rob Niemeyer in Department of Mathematics and Statistics.  The therapeutic impact of the text is felt by anyone who has ever struggled with math or anyone who has known someone to struggle with math.  Everyone who has read this book comes away feeling more connected with mathematics and less isolated in their frustration around the subject.  It is for this reason that we encourage all MSU Denver students to attend Dr. Su’s  plenary talk on November 6th, 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. in St. Cajetan’s.
