Genomic Research Experiences for Undergraduates

Participants gain exposure to foundational concepts, cutting-edge technologies, and real-world applications in this rapidly evolving discipline—while building the skills and confidence needed to thrive as emerging scientists. 

GREU Program Features: 

Mentored Research and Academic Training 

• First-Year (Novice) Scholars:
  Engage in research rotations across both wet (laboratory-based) and dry (computational) genomics labs during the fall and spring semesters, followed by a full-time, immersive summer research experience. 
• Second-Year (Apprentice) Scholars:
  Continue in a sustained research project, deepening technical expertise and independence in a chosen area of genomics. 
• Scholars complete key coursework (e.g., General Biology, Genetics, Introduction to Statistics, and other courses depending on majors), which may extend time to graduation but strengthens preparation for advanced study. 

Professional Development
Participate in workshops focused on research methods, scientific communication, and career exploration in genomics and related STEM fields. 

Individualized Mentorship
Receive guidance from the GREU team, research mentors, and near-peer mentors to support academic, research, and career goals. 

Supportive Scholarly Community
Join a collaborative and inclusive cohort that fosters scientific identity, confidence, and individualized support. 

Program Benefits 

• Up to 4 semesters of tuition and fee support 
• Health insurance coverage during the fall and spring semesters 
• Up to $15,000 a year in stipend support
• Travel funding for conference presentations 
• Technology support to facilitate research and learning

Through immersive research experiences, this program fosters scholars’ transformation into scientists and prepares them for graduate study and impactful careers in genomic research.

Application:

• Applications for the AY27/28 GREU Scholar cohort will open on December 1, 2026.

Eligibility: This is an NIH-funded program. The requirements are:

• Must have completed one academic year of college
• Be a US citizen or permanent resident.
