About this Program

The General Education Alternative Licensure 2-Year Program (ALP 2) includes professional coursework, classroom observation, and coaching designed for candidates teaching early childhood Education through 12th grade.

 

PRIOR TO ENROLLMENT

ALP 2 Candidates must:

  • Have been hired as a full-time teacher in any Colorado Front Range public school district, public or private charter school, or accredited private school
  • Meet the Colorado Department of Education ALP requirements

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

Year 1

  • Attend five days of Summer Seminar training in July
  • Attend MSU Denver ALP 2 classes and complete ALP 2 coursework
  • Demonstrate proficiency on approximately half of the Colorado Teacher Quality Standards
  • Complete a Teacher Work Sample
  • Begin building a Teaching Portfolio documenting progress toward meeting the Colorado Teacher Quality Standards
  • Complete 140 hours of contact time with support team
  • Face-to-face coaching
  • Face-to-face and online classes

Year 2

  • Complete remaining requirements for Teaching Portfolio
  • Demonstrate proficiency on remaining Colorado Teacher Quality Standards
  • Complete 85 hours of contact time with support team
  • Face-to-face coaching
  • Face-to-face with some online classes

TUITION

  • Tuition is $5,350.00 for the first year + Mandatory Student Fees
  • 10 undergraduate credits are awarded for the fall semester and 20 undergraduate credits are awarded for the spring semester, for a total of 30 credits
  • Second year ALP 2 candidates will receive coaching by a MSU Denver ALP coach
  • The cost for coaching during the second year is $2,500.00
  • Zero credits are awarded during the second year and no student fees are required
  • Tuition and fee rates are subject to change.

CURRICULUM

MSU Denver course curriculum content covers strands important to the development of an effective teacher. They include:

  • Classroom discipline and management
  • Short and long range planning
  • Unit and lesson plans, implementation
  • Comprehensive assessment
  • Educational theory
  • Differentiated instruction
  • Current issues in education
  • Literacy

CLASS SCHEDULE

  • ALP 2 candidates are required to attend five days of “SUMMER SEMINAR” training in July.
  • During the school year, classes are held once a week from 5:15pm – 8:15pm.
  • Classes are face-to-face with some online.

Program Accreditation

MSU Denver’s teacher licensure programs are approved by the Colorado State Board of Education and the Colorado Department of Higher Education.
