The Fund honors the memory of Dr. Hal Gordon Tamblyn, Emeritus Professor of Music at Metropolitan State University Denver and founder of the Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Music Program. Knowing that the expenditure level needed to support a symphony orchestra that can perform the full range of orchestral literature can be sometimes extraordinary, he wished to have funds available for the program to supplement what is needed for short and long-term goals.

His career at MSU Denver began in 1971 as an Associate Professor of Music, and in 1974, he was promoted to Full Professor with tenure. In 1976, he became the department chair and remained in that position for 24 years. In the year 2000, he took on the role of Coordinator of the Arts, and three years later served the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences as an Associate Dean until his retirement in the summer of 2008. In 2000, the year the Kenneth King Center was completed, he was awarded the University’s Distinguished Service Award. He was an accomplished composer and arranger, a jazz and classical musician, choral and instrumental conductor, teacher and educator, administrator, mentor, and a relentless advocate for fine and performing arts in education programs.

The Dr. Hal Tamblyn Orchestra Program Fund exists to provide added financial support for the needs of the symphony orchestra program in the University’s Department of Music. Examples include, but are not limited to, promotion of the program, music, instruments, supplies, and equipment for student and course needs, and expenses associated with events, travel, professional development, and any other expense necessary to support and further develop the program.
