Opening Doors Through Access

When Shukria Gulzar ’25 enrolled at Metropolitan State University of Denver in August 2021, she was searching for a program that aligned with her passion for cybersecurity and computer science. She found more than a degree; she found a community.

“I’ve always been interested in cybersecurity and computer science,” Gulzar said. “MSU Denver stood out because it’s diverse, affordable and very community-based. That’s ultimately why I chose it.”

MSU Denver’s commitment to students gave Gulzar the opportunity to pursue higher education without sacrificing affordability or inclusivity. As an Afghan student and a recipient of support from the Denver Scholarship Foundation (DSF), she experienced firsthand how resources and partnerships can open doors for students from all backgrounds.

Academic Excellence in Action

Gulzar thrived in MSU Denver’s Computer Science program, earning her degree in 2025 with a minor in Computer Security. She credits her professors for creating an environment that challenged and supported her.

“My favorite classes were Image Processing with Dr. Feng and Operating Systems with Dr. Zhu,” she said. “Dr. Daniel Pittman supported me the most throughout my journey.”

Beyond the classroom, student clubs and the Computer Science Student Lounge became essential spaces for learning and connection. Gulzar also worked as a student employee in the Department of Computer Science, gaining hands-on experience that taught her communication, organization and problem-solving skills. These are skills she uses daily, now, in her career.

Climbing the Ladder of Social Mobility

After graduation, Gulzar faced the same challenge many new graduates encounter: finding that first job. Through her connection with DSF, she landed an opportunity that aligned with her skills and values.

Today, Gulzar works as an IT Support Administrator, managing Microsoft 365 administration, troubleshooting and end-user support. The role has given her practical experience with security, device management and cloud tools. All of this form the foundation for her ultimate goal of entering the cybersecurity field.

“I enjoy solving problems and making someone’s day easier, especially when technology feels overwhelming,” she said.

Advice for Future Roadrunners

Gulzar encourages current and future students to take advantage of campus resources and build connections.

“Join student clubs or attend events. It’s a great way to meet people and feel more connected,” she said. “If you can, try to get a student job on campus; it helps you learn skills and opens many opportunities.”

Her message to alumni: Stay engaged. “Check your email and keep your LinkedIn updated. It’s a great way to network and stay in touch with the MSU Denver community.”

A Journey of Growth and Gratitude

Looking back, Gulzar says MSU Denver helped her grow personally and professionally. “My journey wasn’t always easy, but it pushed me to stay determined and find a career path I’m excited about,” she said. “I hope my story encourages others, especially first-generation and nontraditional students, to keep going and believe in themselves.”

She also gives special thanks to the Department of Computer Science and Corrie Velasquez, who supported her throughout her time on campus. “She truly cares about students and works hard to make the department a strong resource,” Gulzar said.
