About Writing Principles
If you are unsure about your ability to write an effective document, the Writing Principles course will improve your writing skills and boost your confidence. Implementing the techniques that you learn in this class will prepare you to successfully communicate in writing for many different circumstances.
You will refresh and refine your writing skills by learning about style, structure, and grammar. The course focuses on adapting skills connected to writing styles, writing structures, and the technical aspects of writing, such as grammar, punctuation, and mechanics, to new writing tasks and audiences. You will leverage their current writing skills and learned skills to new situations.
Course information
Learning outcomes:
- Identify strengths and areas for improvement in their writing
- Identify usage patterns in their writing and adapt those patterns to varying writing tasks
- Evaluate new writing tasks and apply effective structures in those tasks
- Evaluate new writing tasks and select and apply appropriate prior writing knowledge
- Compose documents that are responsive to audience needs, writing purposes, and genre conventions
Competencies you will gain:
- Produce documents that effectively communicate with various internal and external audiences
- Independently produce documents in both familiar and new genres needed for professional and personal writing tasks
- Can adapt writing skills to new writing situations, like a new position or career
The course costs $425, with a $35 transaction fee per payment. No books are required for this course.
After completing the course, you will receive a digital badge that will be embedded with the competencies learned. This badge can be added to your resume, LinkedIn page, portfolio, or even share it with your current or future employer.
Jessica L. Parker, PhD, has more than two decades of experience teaching writing. She has a degree in English and Biology from Baylor University and a Master’s and PhD in English from the University of Denver. Jessica is currently a Professor of English and Director of First Year Writing. She loves language and helping others to work with language effectively. She deeply believes in the power of writing to help all of us achieve our goals and desires.
