SPO courses offer flexibility, but success depends on early participation, consistency, and communication.

What is “Self-Paced Online” Learning?

All self-paced courses at MSU Denver are online, but not all online courses are self-paced. That single distinction is the difference between learning on your own schedule and attending class virtually two to three times a week. Let’s break it down further.

Self-Paced Online Courses

Self-paced online courses let you skip the weekly lectures, learn at your own pace, and access all of the course content at one time. This learning modality is best suited for students who can manage their own time effectively.

· All assignments, exams, and participation requirements still apply.

· You are responsible for managing your time and progress.

How Do I Succeed in SPO Courses at MSU Denver?

Students who are successful in SPO courses typically follow these guidelines.

1. Participate Before the Census (Drop Deadline)

MSU Denver requires academic participation by the Census (drop deadline) date for all courses, including SPO. Be sure to participate, or you will get dropped from the course, even if tuition and fees remain due.

· Participation may include an assignment, quiz, discussion, or other instructor-designated activity.

Pro tip: Log into Canvas and complete a participation activity as soon as the course opens.

2. Stay Organized and Consistent

Set aside weekly study time just as you would for an in-person class. For most students, this is the key to a successful SPO course experience.

· Break coursework into smaller tasks.

· Don’t wait until the end of the term to begin assignments.

3. Check Canvas Regularly

Log in to Canvas multiple times per week to be sure you are staying ahead of your coursework.

· Read announcements and review feedback.

· Monitor deadlines and course progress.

4. Communicate Early

Contact your instructor promptly if you have questions or concerns. If they don’t know about it, they can’t fix it!

· If life circumstances interfere with coursework, communicate sooner rather than later.

5. Evaluate If SPO Is Right for You

SPO courses work best for students who are:

· Self-motivated and organized

· Comfortable learning online

· Able to manage their time independently
