Ready to find out what MSU Denver can do for you? We’ve got you covered.
When Amy Dieterich ’14 enrolled at Metropolitan State University of Denver, she was already balancing more than most college students. As a nontraditional and first-generation student, she juggled work, life responsibilities and a full academic load, all while trying to carve out a future that once felt out of reach.
“MSU Denver was a really important part of my journey,” Dieterich said. “The flexibility and real-world focus made a huge difference for me. I felt supported by my professors and classmates, and my experience helped me gain confidence in myself and where I wanted to go.”
That sense of belonging allowed her to pursue a double major in Marketing and Finance, graduating in 2014. For Dieterich, earning her degree wasn’t just an academic milestone. It was a turning point.
“Earning my degree truly opened doors and set the foundation for my career,” she said.
Academic Excellence That Translates to Real-World Impact
Dieterich was already working in the employee benefits field when she started her coursework, but MSU Denver gave her the tools to advance. The University’s emphasis on applied learning and professional readiness helped her sharpen the skills she needed to thrive.
“MSU Denver gave me the business acumen I needed to succeed,” she said. “I’ve always had an entrepreneurial mindset, but learning the practical side of business, from Microsoft Office to industry terminology and professional communication, helped me truly find my footing.”
That blend of ambition and academic excellence positioned her for growth. Once she completed her degree, the barriers that had previously limited her opportunities began to fall away.
“Once I had my degree, I didn’t have to worry about being passed over for not checking that box,” she said. “It made it easier to continue growing in my career.”
Leading With Purpose in the Employee Benefits Industry
Today, Dieterich serves as the Director of Sales and Marketing at Intrepid Benefits, where she works closely with business executives to simplify one of the most complex aspects of the workplace: health insurance and employee benefits.
Her role centers on helping employers manage rising healthcare costs while still offering meaningful, high-quality benefits that support their teams and strengthen company culture. It’s work that requires both technical expertise and a deep commitment to people.
“I enjoy working with teams, building relationships and helping people better understand their benefits so they can truly get the most out of them,” she said. “I’m always learning about businesses and roles I never would have imagined.”
Her focus on relationship-building reflects the heart of her professional philosophy — and the foundation of her success.
“Relationships matter more than anything,” she said. “Invest in them, nurture them, and don’t be afraid to ask for help or support. Most people genuinely want to see you succeed.”
A Career That Embodies Social Mobility
Dieterich’s journey as a first-generation student balancing work and school to becoming a director advising business leaders across industries is a clear example of social mobility in action. Her degree didn’t just validate her expertise; it expanded her opportunities and accelerated her trajectory.
Now, she’s focused on continuing to grow Intrepid’s client base and supporting organizations that can benefit from her team’s work. Each partnership she builds helps employers and employees navigate a complicated system with more clarity and confidence.
Giving Back to the University That Helped Her Rise
Despite her busy career, Dieterich remains closely connected to MSU Denver. She serves on the Alumni Association Board of Directors and supports the University whenever she can.
“MSU Denver had a meaningful impact on my life, so giving back is important to me,” she said.
A Roadrunner Story Rooted in Mission
Dieterich’s story is one of persistence, opportunity and the power of education to transform a life — and, through her work, the lives of many others.
“I’m grateful for the foundation MSU Denver gave me,” she said. “It helped me build a career I’m proud of and gave me the confidence to keep growing.”
