Department of Health Professions
Lifestyle Medicine Interest Group
Lifestyle medicine is the foundation of medical treatment for the chronic diseases that account for the majority of death and disability in the United States and around the world. Well done research states that diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and even cancer can be prevented, partially reversed, and sometimes entirely reversed through intensive lifestyle change. Lifestyle changes include healthy eating, increasing physical activity, stress management, emotional wellness, addressing environmental exposures, coaching behavior change, and self-care.
The LMIG at MSU Denver is founded in affiliation with the American College of Lifestyle Medicine Professionals in Training (PiT) in order to allow the organized collaboration of a group of prevention-oriented student members who hold a passionate interest in Lifestyle Medicine as well as increasing awareness of the field. LMIG at MSU Denver recognizes the need for future health care innovation and has invested passionate interest in the promotion of health through the identification and eradication of the causes of disease rather than the standard practice of medical procedures and prescription medication. LMIG at MSU Denver is part of a national community of healthcare trainee leaders which are at the forefront of the emerging Lifestyle Medicine movement which collectively aims for an outcome-based delivery system of health care through the development of expertise in disease prevention, treatment, and reversal of chronic disease with the application of evidence-based practice and research.
The overall goal for this student organization chapter is to cater to the interchange of knowledge and create local, national, and even international interaction between future healthcare leaders who exhibit interest in the practice of Lifestyle Medicine in both their careers and personal life. The objectives of this organization include: to provide education opportunities for students to learn about the profession of Lifestyle Medicine in practice, to grow student awareness of the newest Lifestyle Medicine advances and research, to nurture student participation in outreach activities, to increase the awareness of what Lifestyle Medicine career opportunities exist, to advance professional leadership and development, and for students to lead by example through the promotion of happier and healthier lifestyles in their own lives as well as their local communities and beyond.
The MSU Denver chapter of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine Professionals in Training LMIG welcomes any student interested in evidence-based healthy lifestyle practices from a professional or personal standpoint.
