MSU Denver’s advising program provides a foundation for student success at the institution. By engaging fully in the advising process, students gain an understanding of curricular and co-curricular opportunities and support systems and practice problem solving, decision-making, meaning-making, planning, and goal setting. To help in communicating these expected outcomes of advising, MSU Denver has established a set of student learning outcomes (SLO’s).
By engaging fully in the advising process, MSU Denver students:
- Can identify advisor(s) appropriate to their academic career stage.
- Choose academic programs appropriate for their educational and life goals.
- Are able to use appropriate academic planning tools.
- Develop an academic plan/roadmap that defines expected academic milestones/success markers.
- Have regular meaningful interactions with an appropriate academic advisor.
- Complete academic milestones/success markers appropriate for their academic program and stage.
- Understand their role and responsibilities in the academic advising process.
- Are able to access appropriate supplementary resources.
The MSU Denver advising program assesses advising SLO’s in a few different ways. One of those ways is through pre- and post-appointment surveys.
Advisors are provided tablets to assist with deploying these surveys. They are expected to use them at established points before and after each student appointment. The tablet is a multifunctional advising tool and may assist during the appointment with course search, registration, resource finding, etc. Advisors should adhere to the instructions provided for using the tablet to 1) ensure successful completion of the survey and 2) protect private information from one student appointment to the next.
1. Open the survey by pressing the “Open Me” icon.
2. Make sure to have the survey open for students when they visit you. Ask them to begin the survey at the start of your meeting.
3. The survey will pause after the first set of randomly selected questions. It will instruct the student to “PLEASE STOP AND CHECK WITH YOUR ADVISOR BEFORE CONTINUING”
4. Always make sure that students log out of their account if they are registering for classes on your iPad.
5. At the end of your meeting, please have the student continue with the survey. Each link will open in a new tab. If the student is registering during the meeting they can switch back to the survey tab within the browser.

iPad Instructions
You can always use the Home button to get back to your saved links
The first time you use your iPad, you will need to connect to the wifi (using your MSU Denver credentials). Save your Major’s SLO Survey to your home screen.
- Use the chart below to open your survey
- Press the ‘Bookmark’ icon (box with arrow coming out of it to the right of the web address)
- Press ‘Add to Home Screen +’
- Before saving the link, change the Name to “Open Me” by tapping the words “MSU Denver” in the popup and replacing them
- Press ‘Add’
- Open your home screen (press the ‘Home’ button at the bottom)
- Move the ‘Open Me’ and ‘Banner’ shortcuts to the first Home Screen. It’s the one that’s furthest on the left. Move the rest of the shortcuts, including the ‘Start Here’ icon, to the second home screen. It’s the one furthest on the right.
- Hold down on the ‘Start Here’ shortcut until it starts to wiggle
- Drag it to the right of the screen
- The screen should swipe to the left. Drop the ‘Start Here’ icon on this second home screen.
- Repeat this drag & drop process until the icons you want students to use are on the far left home screen, and the other icons are on the far right
- You’re all set!
If you want to use Chrome, you can move it to the first home screen. It won’t let you create shortcuts, but it will let you create bookmarks.
