The “What to do if ICE comes to campus” handout is meant to to provide clear answers to common questions from faculty and staff on how to react in a number of hypothetical situations.

Please note that as of January 7, 2025,  ICE has never conducted any type of enforcement or detention activities on campus.

This document outlines options for students to withdraw from courses, or switch modes of instruction, in the case that they, or a caregiver/guardian/immediate family member, face detention or otherwise are impacted by immigration enforcement. The options outlined here have been in place for many years and provide options to students who face a variety of unforeseen situations that significantly and negatively impact their ability to successfully complete coursework.

This guide has information about your rights as an immigrant. United We Dream have put together a complete guide that will hopefully provide the information needed for people to protect and defend their rights. You should also review this Know Your Rights Guide by the American Civil Liberties Union.

Be prepared! Make a Family Plan

It is very important to be prepared to face all possible scenarios, and for immigrant families, it is crucial to think ahead and put in place concrete plans for immigration emergencies that could happen. The Immigrant Legal Resource Center has put together a helpful “Step-by-Step Family Preparedness Plan”, which contains a detailed list of items to do or think about.

USAHello has put together this guide for individuals preparing for immigration proceedings or deportations. Please note that the information in this guide is subject to changes and may or may not be out of date at the time when you access it.

Life happens. If you can’t communicate with MSU Denver, who can step in for you? A proxy is someone you authorize to talk to the university to handle your classes, financial aid or grades. Without one, even family can’t access your info during an emergency.

Proxies can request information on your behalf regarding the following:

• Registrar: Academic records, grades, COF status, registration status, course/schedule information, holds, academic standing

• Bursar/Cashiering: Account balance, financial holds, sponsor information, collections, appeal information, Perkins Loan information, Institutional Correction information

• Financial Aid: Financial Aid file. NOTE: specific dollar amounts cannot be disclosed over the phone. This can be viewed through your Student Hub or in-person with a valid photo ID

• Admissions: Dates of application, documents received/pending, dates of admission, admission status, residency information.

Proxies cannot:

• Make enrollment decisions on your behalf, such as dropping or withdrawing from courses

• Access medical or counseling records
