Disaster Housing Recovery: Colorado’s Past, Present, and Future
Friday, December 5
8:30-10:00 a.m.

With a changing climate, wildfires and other extreme events are more common and destructive, leaving communities reeling and tasked with complicated paths to disaster recovery. One of the major challenges they face is housing recovery, which has become an increasingly prominent topic, especially in light of proposals for the fundamental restructuring of FEMA. States and local governments now bear more of the burden of disaster recovery.

The state of Colorado, local governments across the state, and other practitioners and academics have begun looking at these issues in a more systematic way to aid in recovery from future disasters. Just in the past several years we have seen the devastating effects of disasters on local communities – from Boulder County’s Marshall Fire to the Palisades and Eaton Fires in Los Angeles – with housing recovery a major barrier to rebuilding.

Local and state governments are on the front lines of helping communities and their residents recover. Colorado has taken lessons from past events – from the 2013 floods to the Marshall Fire and many others – to build a better path forward for future events. In this First Friday Breakfast, we will delve into Colorado’s past, present, and future to understand housing recovery and how the state is working to become more resilient and get ahead of future disasters.
