As an MSU Denver student, you have access to professional academic advisors and faculty advisors that can help you navigate college. Whether you’re needing help with general academic advising, deciding on a major, sorting out transfer credit, looking for referrals, choosing classes for next semester, or exploring careers, we’ve got you covered.
When to meet with a Professional Academic Advisor
Professional Academic Advisors can help you:
- Explore and declare a major, minor, and/or concentration
- Design a class schedule
- Teach you how to use tools like the Registration system and the Degree Progress Report
- Connect you with your Academic Department and other support offices
- And much more!
When to meet with a Faculty Advisor
Faculty are the people who teach your classes and some of them advise too! Faculty Advisors:
- Are experts in their fields
- Provide students with recommendations for major or minor course selection
- Assist students with identifying internship and career opportunities
- Offer guidance for students considering graduate school
- Serve as references or write letters of recommendation
Advising Options
Virtual drop-in advising is where you can talk one-on-one with an advisor during scheduled drop-in times. Drop-in sessions typically last 10-15 minutes and should be used for quick questions and small requests. During virtual drop-in, advisors will connect with students online for video call appointments (either through Microsoft Teams or Zoom). Your advisor will most likely send you a personalized link when you’re ready to connect.
Pro tip: No appointment is needed, however, there may be a limited number of spots each day. Come early, as advising spots are first come, first served.
An in-person advising appointment is where you can talk one-on-one with an advisor during a pre-scheduled appointment time. Advising appointments typically last 30 minutes and should be used for more in-depth questions and larger requests. During in-person advising appointments, you will connect with your advisor face-to-face in a physical location such as an office, or a meeting or conference room.
Pro tip: Schedule early as appointment times fill up fast.
