National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)

Project 1 Overview
Investigating the photophysical properties of Lewis acid appended Mn(IV)Oxo complexes. Depending on which T3 mentor you choose to work with, this project may include one or more of the following aspects: synthesis of pentadentate ligand architectures and/or series’ of Lewis acid appended Mn(IV)Oxo complexes, evaluation of these complexes ground- and excited-state characteristics with steady-state and/or transient spectroscopic methods, evaluation of the complexes spin characteristics in the ground and excited states with electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies, and/or evaluation of the dipolar behavior of these complexes in the ground- and excited states using dielectric loss spectroscopies.

Student Slots Available: One ACS-BP Student and One ING-BP Student

Potential T3 Mentors on this Project:
Dr. Megan Lazorski  (MSU Denver and NREL)
Dr. Shailesh Ambre (MSU Denver)
Dr. Wade Braunecker (NREL)
Dr. David Mulder (NREL)
Dr. Melissa Gish (NREL)

Project 2 Overview
Investigating Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology and Storage Materials. Depending on which T3 mentor you choose to work with, this project may include one or more of the following aspects: evaluation of metal catalysis materials on mesoporous structures for hydrogen atom desorption processes, the role of Ru and noble metal catalysts on the ammonia decomposition mechanism, modification of covalent organic framework nanostructures (COFn), hydrogen sorption on COFn materials in liquid polymers, and/or modeling and synthesis of gas adsorption in coated framework materials.
