While classes took a pause this week for Spring Break, we decided to keep our MPAcc March Madness momentum going and host our virtual Accounting Alumni Panel this past Wednesday, March 20th. The event featured 3 MPAcc alumni in different professional career paths, moderated by one of our MPAcc faculty and alum, Amy Cardillo, MPAcc, CPA.
Featured panelists:
- Christian Allognon, MPAcc, CPA – Reporting Accountant at Ovintiv (oil and gas)
- Lance Grothe, MPAcc, CPA, CFP – President at Grothe Financial Services P.C. (a tax, accounting, and wealth strategies company)
- Karen Gurgel, MPAcc, CFE – Special Agent at Internal Revenue Service (government administration)
Hearing each of their journeys to and through our MSU Denver Master of Professional Accountancy program was quite the walk down memory lane. Whether stumbling upon MSU Denver after applying to other local institutions or hearing about our program from a colleague, they began to see their promising future at MSU Denver.
As the discussion continued, common themes that emerged surrounded the wide array of career avenues and opportunities that the MPAcc program could provide. The panelists all agreed that the in-person format was invaluable in building lasting connections with peers and faculty. Additionally, the evening courses allowed them to continue with their day-to-day schedule while making progress towards both their academic and professional goals.
Whether it be gaining confidence and additional skills to apply to their own business, a strong professional network, or an entirely new career, it is key that these alumni have been thriving since graduating from our MSU Denver MPAcc program.
Advice for current MPAcc students and prospective applicants:
- “Keep it going, it’s a great investment in your future. There’s lots of opportunity that comes with finishing the program.” – Lance Grothe
- “Get to know your classmates – use your network” – Karen Gurgel
- “Be visible. Don’t lose focus – try to enjoy each class. Do what you can handle given your work and family responsibilities to make the most out of this program without getting overwhelmed.” – Christian Allognon
Thank you Amy, Christian, Lance, and Karen for taking the time out of your day to share your story and insights with some of our current students and prospective applicants. We appreciate all that you do for our MSU Denver Accounting Student Community!
