With traditional curriculum changes temporarily on hold next academic year, the pause creates dedicated space for departments to focus on designing innovative, skill‑focused learning experiences that can be implemented immediately.
Micro‑credentials — short, competency‑based programs that recognize specific skills or knowledge — have been part of MSU Denver’s academic landscape since the Micro‑Credential and Digital Badging Policy took effect in August 2022. The policy empowers academic departments and University units to create and award digital badges that document meaningful learning achievements, whether tied to academic coursework, co‑curricular experiences or professional skill development. These badges can be displayed on platforms such as LinkedIn, helping students articulate their learning and abilities to employers in a clear, verifiable way.
The University Badging Committee, established to support and review proposals, has outlined a clear process for faculty interested in developing new micro‑credentials. Proposals begin in Modern Campus Curriculum (MCC) and must include measurable outcomes, relevant artifacts, assessment methods and a designated program manager. The committee reviews submissions for completeness, quality and alignment with University standards before approval.
The upcoming curriculum pause — designed to reduce the volume of substantive changes during the 2026‑27 academic year and support a smooth reaccreditation process — provides faculty with uninterrupted time to think creatively, collaborate across departments and build micro‑credentials that align with industry needs. Because micro‑credentials are not part of the traditional curriculum‑approval pipeline, they can continue to be developed and refined during the pause.
Micro‑credentials offer a powerful way to enhance students’ workforce readiness while they progress toward their degrees. By focusing on targeted competencies — such as data literacy, communication, leadership, industry‑specific tools or emerging technologies — faculty can help students stand out in a competitive job market. These credentials also support MSU Denver’s mission of providing accessible, career‑relevant education that meets the needs of Colorado’s evolving workforce.
Faculty members interested in developing a micro‑credential are encouraged to review the policy, explore existing badges and begin drafting proposals during the pause.
