Metropolitan State University of Denver’s Staff Senate convened Nov. 9 with an array of updates, including recent successes, committee updates, Senate business, announcements and an open forum. The Senate meeting was led by Brandi Rideout, vice president and senior director of Alumni Engagement, in lieu of Rebecca Reid, president and innovation and transformation analyst.   

Celebratory announcements 

  • Socktober shattered the previous record for the second straight year after raising $17,785 from 356 donors, benefiting the Roadrunner Food Pantry, Dreamer Emergency Fund and Student Emergency Fund.  
  • The Roadrunner volleyball team won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship Nov. 12 and will host an NCAA regional tournament Nov. 17-19. Buy tickets here. 
  • The Hospitality Learning Center celebrates its 10th anniversary. 
  • The Department of Social Work celebrated 10 years of master’s programs and 25 years of bachelor’s programs on Oct. 25.

Committee updates 

Executive Committee 

The Staff Senate budget-request form is live, and requests are due by Dec. 8 to be reviewed before winter break. 

Budget Task Force 

The Budget Recommendation Committee met Oct. 28 to discuss its updated structure and representation.  

Senate Policy Review Committee 

The committee continues to meet and discuss ways for staff to provide their individual voice in the policy-review process to form a staffwide consensus. 

Communication Committee 

The Staff Senate meeting link has been corrected, and Early Bird articles are being added to the Staff Senate SharePoint site 

Elections Committee 

The Elections Committee is developing a proposal to split College of Health and Applied Sciences senators and redistribute at-large positions to areas in need of better representation. A vote will be taken in December. 

Recognition and Scholarships Committee 

Nominations for Staff Excellence Awards are open until Dec. 2. 

Staff Employment and Support Committee 

This committee has open seats, and anyone interested in joining should contact the Executive Committee. 

Senate Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee 

The JEDI Committee is compiling a list of diversity, equity and inclusion professional-development opportunities for senators and constituents, including a Canvas self-guided course. There will also be a book conversation surrounding “Me and White Supremacy” in spring. 

Senate Business 

Berry, Stacy Dvergsdal, associate vice president of Human Resources, and George Middlemist, Ph.D., outgoing chief financial officer, will attend the Staff Senate working session Nov. 29 to discuss budget and compensation.
