As the fourth of 10 children, and the only girl, life is never dull for Metropolitan State University of Denver student Sanaa Walker. So, it should come as no surprise that when facing a busier-than-ever academic year, she is barely breaking a sweat.
Born and raised in Denver, Colorado, Walker grew up excelling in balancing her family and academic responsibilities. However, the stress of a health issue and moving to a new school partway through high school took its toll.
“When choosing a college, I looked for a place where I’d have the freedom to dive into my passions and do my own thing,” said Walker. “I discovered that opportunity at MSU Denver.
Upon her arrival at the University, Walker wanted to study law, learn languages, travel, explore the culinary arts – and that’s just the half of it! With over 100 majors and 100 minors to choose from, she was able to customize her college experience to meet her educational needs and career ambitions.
“As someone with many interests, MSU Denver has been the perfect environment to explore them all,” said Walker, who is majoring in Event and Meeting Management, minoring in Psychology and earning a Culinary Arts Certificate.
Walker’s path has been zig-zaggy, but advisors helped her map out a plan that supports her goals of attending law school and utilizing her entrepreneurial spirit to combat food insecurity.
In addition to classes and carving out time for church and family, Walker’s on-campus responsibilities include working for the Office of University Events in the CAVEA Theater and for the College Works team in the Classroom to Career Hub; serving as secretary on the Hotel & Culinary Management Association board; and participating in the Urban Leadership Program.
Throughout her journey, wraparound services like Rowdy’s Corner, the Access Center and the Classroom to Career Hub have enabled Walker to thrive both in and out of the classroom. And she’s experienced great joy from learning from faculty members who go above and beyond, participating in programs that connect her to the campus community and receiving scholarships that alleviate the financial burden of higher education.
“I am so grateful for the support of my MSU Denver family,” said Walker, who is slated to graduate in fall 2026. “For students like me, who come from varied backgrounds to pursue their goals and achieve their dream of earning a degree, donors are a lifeline.”
“On behalf of all Roadrunners, past, present and future, thank you for everything you do for MSU Denver!”
