Research Focus

My research interests focus on evolution, biogeography, conservation and population genetics, specifically hydrobiid snails. Hydrobiids are the largest group of freshwater gastropods, comprising more than 400 recent and fossil genera and several thousand extant species.  These snails are ideal subjects because of their diversity, antiquity, and linkage with drainage systems.

Currently my lab is focusing on developing microsatellite primers and studying mitochondrial gene order for pebblesnails. Students participating in my research project will learn experimental design, DNA extraction, primer design, polymerase chain reactions, sequencing, data analysis, and manuscript preparation.
