The online Political Science B.A. teaches you how power works and how to use that knowledge to make change. You’ll build skills in policy analysis, research, writing, debate, and ethical reasoning that translate directly into work in government, law, advocacy, journalism, and the private sector.
The curriculum spans American politics, public policy, international relations, comparative politics, law, campaigns and elections, leadership, and political theory. You can lean into U.S. politics or international and comparative work, and you’ll graduate with the analytical tools to understand local, national, and global affairs and the writing and communication skills to act on what you learn.

MSU Denver Political Science majors graduate ready for law school, policy work, federal agencies, and graduate study. The department’s award-winning teacher-scholars run Pre-Law Advising, mentor Debate Team and Mock Trial competitors, coach Model UN delegations, and stay involved with majors from the first course through senior capstones.
Ammie Kellim is one example. She started at MSU Denver during COVID with her first class delivered remotely. She graduated in Fall 2024 with a Political Science B.A., the University’s President’s Award, leadership roles on the Debate Team and Mock Trial Association, and a path to law school. Her constitutional law professor, Jeremiah Castle, called her “one of the most active and engaged members of our prelaw program.”
American Politics and Government. Study the institutions, processes, and political behavior that shape U.S. policy at the federal, state, and local levels.
Public Policy and Policy Analysis. Learn how policy gets made, evaluated, and changed across issues like healthcare, immigration, environment, and economic policy.
International Relations and Global Politics. Examine how states, international organizations, and non-state actors interact on issues of security, trade, human rights, and global governance.
Comparative Politics. Compare political systems, institutions, and movements across countries to understand why governments work the way they do.
The program lets you build depth in the areas that matter most to your goals, whether that’s law, policy, international work, or political communication.
Law, Courts, and the Constitution. Study constitutional law, civil liberties, judicial behavior, and the legal foundations of American government as preparation for law school or legal careers.
Campaigns, Elections, and Political Communication. Learn how campaigns are run, how voters decide, and how political messages move through media and public opinion.
Political Theory and Ethics. Engage the foundational questions about power, justice, rights, and democracy that drive political debate.
Research and Methods. Develop the quantitative and qualitative research skills to analyze political data, design studies, and produce evidence-based arguments.
A political science degree opens doors across government, law, advocacy, media, and the private sector. Graduates work in roles where understanding policy, institutions, and how power moves matters.

Campaigns and political communication: campaign organizer, political consultant, communications coordinator, press aide
Nonprofit and advocacy: program coordinator, community organizer, lobbyist, advocacy associate

Many graduates go on to graduate school in law, public policy, public administration, international affairs, and political science.
