What Do You Learn in an Online Accounting Degree?

Accounting turns financial activity into reliable information that organizations use to report results, manage risk and make decisions. In the online Accounting B.S., you’ll learn how that information is created, evaluated and communicated.

Your accounting coursework covers financial reporting, cost accounting, accounting information systems, income tax, auditing and attestation, ethics and advanced accounting. The College of Business core adds business analytics, economics, finance, management, marketing, information systems and business law.

Academic and professional foundation: The degree is offered through MSU Denver’s AACSB-accredited College of Business. Accounting majors can also pursue internships and independent study opportunities that connect coursework to accounting work.

For example:

  • Robert Persichitte, CPA and CFE, has more than a decade of professional accounting experience and previously worked as a lead data analytics auditor for the City and County of Denver. At MSU Denver, he leads the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance course, where students apply their tax knowledge while providing free tax preparation to community members.
  • Sheri Betzer, CPA and CFE, works with a local CPA firm specializing in litigation support and fraud investigations. Her experience includes work involving the U.S. Department of Justice, Colorado Department of Revenue and public defender offices, giving students insight into how accounting supports investigations and ethical decisions.
  • William Mesa, CPA and CGMA, is the founder of a consulting firm that helps small and midsize businesses use strategy and analytics. His teaching and research connect accounting with data analysis, professional ethics and the changing role of technology in the field.
