Meet Ronica Redmond-James!

Hi my name is Ronica, and I am an aspiring entrepreneur passionate about launching my own business in the beauty or restaurant industry. I value the supportive CBUS community. I have grown my skills and connections through campus involvement and my work-study position.

Q&A with Ronica

What does a typical day look like for you during the semester?
On a typical day, I’ll wake up in the morning and take a run with my dog. I have like a four year old husky, so I’m really active. After that I’ll drive down the campus, go to class, and then I’ll go to work. I actually work on campus as well. So I’ll have my classes in the morning and then I’ll go to my job later in the evening.

What has your journey at MSU Denver been like?
It has definitely been a rollercoaster. I’m not a transfer student, but I’m an out of state student. I’m from Chicago. Adjusting to Denver, all in all, has been very interesting and there were many times where I felt like I don’t know if I could do it, but I feel like the community that I’ve found here has given me the motivation to just stick with it.

What are you passionate about within business?
Honestly, I want to make a lot of money. I want to get into the field and start my own business and follow my mom’s footsteps. She’s also really big in the business industry back home, so I just want to be a woman entrepreneur.

What are your future career plans?
I want to start my own business, whether it’s something in the beauty industry or something in the restaurant industry. Those are two big passions of mine. So whatever business I start will have to be within one of those industries.

What clubs, organizations, or events have you enjoyed the most at MSU Denver?
Honestly, we have a bunch of festivals throughout the year, so I really like the outdoor activities that we have on campus.

What advice would you give to new business students?
You’re not going to know everything from the beginning, and you really have to count your wins. There are going to be times when you’ll doubt yourself, especially in our freshman year. You’re going to be thinking like, you have to put in so much work. And although this is true, you also have to give yourself grace.

What’s something that you wish you knew before you started college?
That you’re not going to be perfect and that are going to be ups and downs, but you really just have to take it in stride. People say take it with a grain of salt. I like to say take it with a grain of sugar, because really, you just have to make the best of every situation.

What’s your favorite thing about being part of the College of Business at MSU Denver?
Probably the community. There’s so many diverse  students coming from all over and I really like the fact that we’re able to connect here in the College of Business.
