Q&A with Nathan
What does a typical day look like for you during the semester?
I go to school on Mondays and Wednesdays. I get up at 5:30 in the morning. I head all the way down the campus. When I arrive I check my schedule and classwork for the day to make sure I’m on top of everything. At 9:00, I meet one of my teachers for office hours. It’s very important that students do this. It’s great connecting with your professor and they’ll tell you things about your assignments that they might not have had the time to talk about during class. It has really helped me out a whole bunch. From there I go to get my lunch and then I go to my next class. After class on Monday’s, I go to the PSE club meeting. PSE is a fantastic club. I always recommend everyone joins a club. I try to join any and all of them because they can be really fun. Every Wednesday, I do a blood donation at the children’s hospital before I head to campus. I recommend doing these little extra things, community things, even small or big. It does so much more than you can possibly imagine. And my Wednesdays, more or less goes the same. I get up super early in the morning. I get home super late at night, when I’m not at school, I’m at work. This is how you want college life to be. Get used to having these sort of crazy events, get used to long hours, but it will get better.
What has your journey at MSU Denver been like?
I had two journeys, technically, I’m a returning student! Right now, my current journey is all about being smart, partaking in any sort of after class events and campus activities, doing any sort of volunteer work. I make sure I sign up for everything I can, because the more I’m involved in on campus, the more I’m involved with school. So, my second journey has been going amazing so far. I’ve been so happy.
What are you passionate about within business?
I am passionate about business because even though I am a computer science major, business is everywhere so it’s important to at least get a good idea of business. Business is going to be in your life no matter what you do, no matter what economy, business will be part of your life.
What are your future career plans?
I really want to work for Lockheed Martin. There are several other space tech industries that are really good, but Lockheed has blown my mind. They are made of money, and I want to be with them.
What clubs, organizations, or events have you enjoyed the most at MSU Denver?
Definitely Pi Sigma Epsilon. I am big fan of PSE, which is the marketing and finance club. The community, events, and networking is great. I’m a part of other clubs too such as the Cyber Bridge Club for computer science. I’m also in a debate club to improve my ability to speak. But PSE has been a pin in my life and it has made a big difference for me.
What advice would you give to new business students?
If you feel like you need to come back to school or switch your major, don’t be afraid. After graduating with my degree in English, I realized I wanted to do something else for my career so I decided to go back to school for business. It sounds really tough, but it’s okay to not know what you want to do. Take a little break, it’s going to be all right! You can come back and you can really fulfill your career after you get an idea of how the world is and how it works. It has really worked amazing for me.
What’s something that you wish you knew before you started college?
Try to live on or near campus. I partake in a lot of events, meet all sorts of people, and do things with the professors. Don’t treat college like high school, where you just go to class on schedule and don’t do anything outside of class. No, be part of the campus, be part of the life, do things with students, and go to events. Trust me, it is worth it!
What’s your favorite thing about being part of the College of Business at MSU Denver?
The opportunities the college provides. Once again, join clubs. You can’t get these opportunities if you’re just going to class. I would call this required. If you’re going into business think of things that will help improve your skills that you’re weak or strong at and you will not regret.
