Q&A with Genevie
What does a typical day look like for you during the semester?
During the semester, a typical day for me is class after class after class after class. I try to pack my schedule in as full as I can. But, I also sprinkle in a little hanging out with friends. After a typical full school day, I’m involved in some extracurricular groups, student orgs such as PSE, so I usually meet with them after I’m done with classes.
What has your journey at MSU Denver been like?
My journey has been constantly evolving. When I came to college I was really shy, introverted, and not involved in anything. But, every semester I’ve been incorporating more and more activities into my schedule and meeting more and more amazing people. So it’s been moving in the right direction.
What are you passionate about within business?
Business is important to me because I feel like it plays a role in every aspect of life. Even if you’re in law or computer science or anything that’s not strictly business. All of the skills we build in the College of Business can help you in any element of your career.
What are your future career plans?
I want to work in finance because I’m a finance major. I’m not exactly sure what element of finance I want to work in yet, but that’s what we’re doing here, we’re figuring out what we want to do and learning as we go.
What clubs, organizations, or events have you enjoyed the most at MSU Denver?
My favorite organization is Pi Sigma Epsilon. It’s our professional marketing and sales fraternity within the Center for Professional Selling. I love going to the conventions and everything they host nationally. On campus I really like the rowdy rally, or any tabling event that I get to meet other students who are interested in learning more or talking to them and interacting with the community.
What advice would you give to new business students?
My advice to new business students is to talk to your faculty and use all the resources you have. Faculty will connect you with so many other students who are interested in the same things as you, they will give you job opportunities, and they will give you the tools to build who you are as a person. They’re really helpful in connecting you to the right people and getting you the things you need.
What’s something that you wish you knew before you started college?
I wish I knew how to self-advocate. I feel like reaching out, saying what you need, and talking to people is so important. I think a lot of the time as college students, we want to be independent and we want to try to figure stuff out on our own and just rough it out, but there are so many people who want to help you and so many resources. So, just say what you need. Someone will look out for you!
What’s your favorite thing about being part of the College of Business at MSU Denver?
My favorite part of being in CBUS are the resources. I feel like I’m so repetitive, but I think we have the best college on campus. The staff here are so kind and supportive. Everyone here wants you to succeed. The other students are so amazing. I love everything.
