Q&A with Josephina!

1. What has your journey been like after graduating from MSU Denver?
During my time at MSU Denver, I built a strong foundation in hospitality theory — everything from service culture to operations and business strategy. But it was my Dimond Fellowship that brought that learning to life. I worked hands-on in every major department, giving me a true understanding of hotel operations and ultimately earning recognition as Dimond Fellow of the Year.

Right after graduating, I was offered a role as a Sales Coordinator, which allowed me to step directly into the business development side of hospitality. Soon after, I transitioned into an accounting role at the Home2 Suites and Tru by Hilton Downtown Denver, where I supported financial processes and learned the behind-the-scenes systems that keep a hotel running smoothly. That experience strengthened my attention to detail and broadened my operational foundation.

I eventually found my path in business travel sales — a perfect blend of relationship-building, strategy, and community engagement. Today, I manage a diverse portfolio of corporate and negotiated accounts, develop extended-stay programs, create SOPs, and partner with Denver companies to support their travelers.

I’ve now been with Stonebridge for a little over four years, during which I’ve grown into leadership roles, earned Manager of the Quarter, attended GBTA, and become an Ambassador for the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce. My journey has been full of growth, momentum, and opportunity — built on the combination of classroom learning from MSU Denver and the real-world experience.

2. Can you talk about your current role at Stonebridge?
I’m currently the Business Travel Sales Manager for the dual-branded Home2 Suites and Tru by Hilton Downtown Denver Convention Center. In this role, I manage a wide mix of local negotiated and national corporate accounts, ranging from Fortune 500 companies to rapidly growing Denver businesses. My focus is on securing preferred partnerships, increasing market share, and ensuring our hotel remains competitive and visible in the corporate travel landscape.

A big part of my work involves understanding what each company and traveler truly needs — whether it’s rate strategy, extended-stay accommodations, or elevated support during long projects. I build customized booking tools, marketing materials, and extended-stay agreements that make the entire travel process seamless and consistent for our partners.

Strategically, I analyze performance through Lighthouse, STR, Kalibri, and Knowland to track production, identify trends, and find new opportunities. I also collaborate closely with our front desk, operations leaders, and revenue teams to ensure our guests receive a smooth experience from reservation to checkout.

What I love most is that the role blends data, creativity, and relationship-building. It’s equal parts sales strategy, community engagement, and guest advocacy — and it allows me to represent both Hilton and the Denver market in a way that truly impacts our hotel’s success.

3. What does a typical workday look like for you?
My day usually starts with reviewing production reports and market data so I know which accounts need attention and where new opportunities are trending. From there, I move into client outreach — scheduling meetings, preparing proposals, following up with travel and procurement managers, and actively prospecting through cold calling and cold emailing.

Networking is also a major part of my role. I spend time connecting with companies across Denver, visiting offices, attending business events, and staying engaged with partners through the Chamber and GBTA. Those relationships help keep our hotel top of mind in the corporate travel market.

When I’m at the property, I collaborate closely with our front desk and leadership teams on guest needs and anything that helps create a smooth, elevated experience for our business travelers. I also design marketing materials in Canva — including must-see Denver destination guides, seasonal deals, booking flyers, and other resources that help travelers make the most of their stay — along with building SOPs and agreements that improve communication and consistency across departments.

One of my favorite parts of hotel sales is that no two days look alike. It’s a role filled with variety — part strategy, part relationship-building, part creative work — and it’s perfect for anyone who doesn’t want to be behind a desk all day and enjoys connecting with people.

4. What are you passionate about in the work that you do?
I’m passionate about building genuine relationships and helping travelers feel supported, especially when they’re away from home for long stretches. I love being a resource for companies — understanding their needs, problem-solving with them, and creating programs that make travel easier.

I’m also energized by the strategy behind business travel: using data, market insights, and creative outreach to shift share and drive revenue. And because I’m a Denver native, I take pride in representing my city and helping businesses feel connected to the community here.

5. In what ways has your MSU Denver experience had an impact on your career and shaped who you are today?
MSU Denver gave me the confidence and the foundation to pursue leadership roles early in my career. The School of Hospitality emphasized hands-on experience, service culture, and strategic thinking — all of which show up in my work daily.

Being part of the Dimond Fellowship, and ultimately being recognized as Dimond Fellow of the Year, shaped my understanding of the industry and exposed me to mentors who genuinely invested in my development. MSU Denver also instilled a strong work ethic, resilience, and a people-first mindset that guides how I lead, sell, and connect today.

6. What career advice would you give to current and prospective MSU Denver students?
Be open to opportunities that stretch you — the best experience in hospitality comes from saying yes, trying new roles, and learning how each department contributes to the overall guest journey. Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty early on; that foundation will make you a stronger leader later.

If you’re someone who thrives on connection and doesn’t want to be behind a desk all day, hotel sales is a path worth considering. One of the best parts of sales is that no two days are ever the same. You’re out in the community meeting people, building relationships, and representing your property in a way that truly impacts its success.

Build your network early — talk to your professors, attend industry events, get involved on campus, and connect with professionals in Denver’s hospitality scene. Those relationships become pathways to internships, mentorships, and full-time roles.

And finally, take pride in every role you hold. Every shift, every project, every interaction builds the habits and reputation that will carry you throughout your career.
