Research Interests
I maintain an active research agenda using survey research to study public opinion in the United States. My main area of research is what role social identities, including religion, play in political polarization. My recent article with Kyla Stepp, "Partisanship, Religion, and Issue Polarization: A Reassessment" (published in Political Behavior), contributes to the literature on political polarization by offering a new theory of how social group identities contribute to issue polarization, as well as debuting a new empirical measure of issue polarization. My article "New Fronts in the Culture Wars: Partisanship, Religion, and Polarization on Same-Sex Marriage and Transgender Rights," published in American Politics Research, argues that the culture wars have expanded to new issue domains over the last decade, and public opinion on those issues is now polarized along religious lines. I am currently working on a broader book project that re-evaluates James Davison Hunter's "culture wars" thesis.
I also study media & politics, including examining whether and how popular films do, and do not, influence public opinion.
