Raúl M. Sánchez is MSU Denver’s chief civil rights compliance officer, as the executive director of the Office of Equal Opportunity and Title IX Coordinator. He is responsible for addressing affirmative action and equal opportunity issues, as well as responding to alleged violations of the Policy Prohibiting Discrimination, Sexual Misconduct and Retaliation. He also oversees and carries out relevant training. Prior to joining MSU Denver, he served as chief civil rights compliance officer at Washington State University (Washington), University of Idaho (Idaho), Stony Brook University (New York) and Union County Community College (New Jersey).
Sánchez received his law degree from Harvard Law School at Harvard University . He also received a master’s degree from the Latin American Studies Program at Stanford University. He received his bachelor’s degree from the Politics Department at Princeton University, as well as an Area Studies Certificate from the Program in Latin American Studies.
Sánchez also has substantial teaching experience. At the beginning of his higher-education career, Sánchez was an Associate Law Professor. He became an administrator over 20 years ago, and continued teaching as an adjunct instructor. He has taught multiple law courses and business courses. Currently, he teaches an online course on Corporate Responsibility and Business Ethics in an executive MBA program. He has published several law articles on issues concerning international human rights and international environmental law.
Prior to his career in higher education, Sánchez worked as a corporate attorney with a law firms in New York City, which took him to countries all over Latin America and Spain. He also was a Program Officer for The Ford Foundation in Mexico and Central America. Right after law school, he was a law clerk for the first female justice on the Colorado Supreme Court.
Sánchez also has considerable experience related to diversity in higher education. In addition to his years as a compliance officer, he was the Chief Diversity Officer at the University of Idaho. He has lived, worked and/or studied in Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Spain. He is fluent in Spanish, Portuguese and English. He is originally from San Antonio, Texas, where his family has resided since the territory was part of Spain.
Sánchez summarizes his goals at MSU Denver as making sure all students, staff and faculty know where to report alleged violations of the Policy Prohibiting Discrimination, Sexual Misconduct and Retaliation in a timely way so they may be investigated in a prompt and effective manner by the Office of Equal Opportunity. His office oversees the mandatory online courses that all employees are required to take. He also carries out in-person training with academic and administrative units throughout MSU Denver.
Amanda Miracle is the Equity Specialist for the Office of Equal Opportunity (OEO). She moved from her hometown of Grand Junction, Colorado, to attend Metropolitan State University of Denver in 2012. As a student at MSU Denver, she worked for First Year Success as a Student Ambassador from 2013-2015. She then joined the Marketing and Communications team in 2015, to be the Student 50th Anniversary Event Coordinator. Amanda graduated from MSU Denver in 2016, with a B.A. in Hospitality, Tourism, and Event Management with a concentration in Events. She has been in her current role since 2017. Amanda works closely with the Executive Director of the Office of Equal Opportunity and Title IX Coordinator, Raúl M. Sánchez. She assists with OEO investigations, coordinates employee required trainings, serves as the primary contact for OEO, ensures smooth operations within the office, and serves on a variety of committees on campus. Amanda enjoys spending her free time in the outdoors and being surrounded by family and friends.
