As you might have recently read, Gov. Jared Polis has declared Monday, July 3, a governor’s holiday for state employees. As Metropolitan State University of Denver has already solidified its summer course schedule, the University will remain open July 3 and observe the special holiday Nov. 22 to best meet our mission and avoid disruption to courses.

What is a special holiday?
It is an additional holiday designated for one-time observance by the governor after the schedule for the state’s 11 paid holidays has been determined. These designations are often announced by the governor within a few weeks of the extra day(s). When this occurs, the University will determine how to observe the holiday to best meet MSU Denver’s needs.

Will the University still close for July 4?
Yes. The University will be closed July 4 as scheduled, with classes and operations resuming July 5.

Will any campus services be closed July 3?
No. All campus services will operate normally July 3.

Are the other Auraria Campus institutions closing July 3?
The University of Colorado Denver and Auraria Higher Education Center will remain open July 3, while Community College of Denver will be closed.

How was Nov. 22 selected as the reallocated special holiday?
This alternate date was selected collaboratively by Academic Affairs, Student Affairs and Human Resources. While many options were considered, this date was deemed to best serve the needs of the University while allowing a true holiday to be enjoyed by faculty and staff members.

Are all employees eligible to take state holidays?
Paid state holidays apply to the following employee classes:

  • Classified staff
  • Professional staff
  • Faculty

Student employees, hourly employees, contractors and others should confer with their supervisor to determine their schedule.
