Contact UsThe first time Chrisnel Akele stepped on stage as a baker in his high school production of “Beauty and the Beast,” a star was born.
“It was thrilling,” said the Metropolitan State University of Denver Musical Theatre major. “The stage has been my home ever since; I can’t imagine doing anything else.”
Born in Benin, West Africa, Akele and his family immigrated to Colorado when he was 12. Living in a new country was challenging, but participating in community activities and volunteer work helped them settle in.
When Akele’s middle school English teacher, Mrs. Klimper, insisted he join the theatre program, there was no way of knowing it would ignite a lifelong passion. “She believed I would be good at it, and boy, was she right.”
Akele soon set his sights on sharing his talents with the world, dreaming of becoming a director and performing on “Saturday Night Live” and as the Genie in “Aladdin” on Broadway.
Those dreams brought him to MSU Denver.
It was love at first sight when Akele and his friends took a tour of campus and the Theatre Department, cementing his decision to enroll. “I am so glad I did,” he said. “MSU Denver was my first choice, and it was the right choice.”
Over the years, Akele has come to consider classmates and faculty members family, their connections helping to build a strong foundation where he could grow and find his true self.
“As with all adventures, there will be ups and downs, but at MSU Denver, you will have people to help guide you,” he said.
On May 16, Akele stood center stage at Commencement, alongside thousands of fellow Roadrunners, each with their own unique story. He is grateful for an “invaluable college experience” and excited to take the next steps on his journey – none of which would be possible without the support of MSU Denver alumni and University friends, who help students like him chase big dreams and overcome obstacles.
“It means more than you can possibly know. The generosity of Roadrunners has helped me pursue what I love and receive an education I’ll never take for granted.”
