Dear Roadrunners,

Following a thorough review of the situation and processes related to the appointment and removal of MSU Denver department chairs, I have reinstated Chicana/o Studies Department Chair Dr. Adriana Nieto.

The review, conducted by former Interim Provost Marie Mora, showed that no University policies were violated in Nieto’s removal.  However, the review identified areas of opportunity in leadership performance amongst both parties, as well as the process surrounding chair appointments and removals.

Decisions like these are tough, nuanced and complex but ultimately, we must ensure that our processes are representative of the community and culture we are cultivating at MSU Denver. All MSU Denver leaders should represent the University with professionalism and act in alignment with our core values.

Investing in people is not just a financial commitment; it’s about providing the necessary resources for our leaders to thrive and succeed.  To that end, I am charging the Office of the Provost with providing ongoing professional development for all academic leaders at MSU Denver, including providing performance-improvement opportunities. Additionally, clearer guidelines for the appointment, renewal and removal of chair positions will be provided.

Provost Laura Niesen de Abruña will be working with Chicana/o Studies leadership on a timeline for the transfer of responsibilities within the department. Our primary objective is to ensure that the Chicana/o Studies department flourishes in the long-term.  Thanks to Deputy Provost Mora for her professionalism throughout this process. I’m confident MSU Denver will be stronger and our Chicana/o Studies Department will emerge as an even more vital part of our mission.

Sincerely,

Janine Davidson, Ph.D.
President
