AI tools can help you study, brainstorm, understand difficult concepts, improve your writing, and practice new skills. But knowing when and how to use them for your classes is not always straightforward.

MSU Denver has published new AI guidance and resources for students to help you make those decisions. The guidance covers using generative AI for coursework, studying, writing and research, along with academic integrity, privacy, citations and disclosure.

A Few Important Things to Know

  • Check the rules for each class and assignment. AI policies can vary from one course to another. If you are unsure whether a particular use is allowed, ask your instructor before using it.
  • Use AI to help you learn, not to do the learning for you. Asking for an explanation, practice questions or feedback can strengthen your understanding. Having AI complete the work you are supposed to learn how to do can have the opposite effect.
  • Check everything AI gives you. AI tools can produce inaccurate information, fabricated citations and confident answers that are simply wrong. You are responsible for what you submit.
  • Be open about how you used AI. When AI use is allowed for submitted work, follow your instructor’s requirements for disclosure and citation.
  • Protect your information. Do not enter confidential, protected or other people’s personal information into AI tools.

The new student resources also include practical examples of stronger and weaker ways to use AI for studying, writing, reading, coding and other academic work, plus a decision guide for those moments when you are wondering, “Can I use AI for this?”
