As we’ll soon start the Fall ‘24 term and welcome new accounting students, we’re also welcoming a new faculty member, Assistant Professor Dr. Kelsey Dworkis. We are thrilled to have her join our Accounting Roadrunner Community!
Dr. Dworkis is a Colorado native, though she has lived in Los Angeles, California and Melbourne, Australia before coming back to her home state. When she’s not teaching or working on her research, she is living the true Colorado native lifestyle – skiing in the winter, hiking in the summer, and running and swimming all year long.
“Studying accounting is like learning a new language, the language of business. It can be challenging, but it can also have a lot of advantages throughout your career. Don’t be afraid of it. Learning accounting will pay dividends in many aspects of your life.”
She was first “bit by the accounting bug” when she took a summer Principles of Accounting I class. She recalls her professor loudly saying in class for all to hear, “If anyone needs help preparing for the second exam, talk to Kelsey since she scored the highest on the first one.” She then knew that accounting clicked for her and never looked back!
She earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration and accountancy at The University of Kansas. After graduation, she was a Senior Auditor at Deloitte and became a CPA. She then earned her PhD at University of Southern California.
Since then, she has taught managerial accounting courses at University of Melbourne and University of Denver. She is fascinated with infusing psychology principles into accounting research, looking at narcissism and its effect on accounting decisions.
Dr. Dworkis' top tips for new accounting students:
- Don’t procrastinate – Stay on top of tasks, whether regarding assignments for a class or items at work for a client.
- Ask questions – While we may not want to have attention on us or are nervous about speaking up, asking questions is key to learning!
Dr. Dworkis will be teaching ACC 1010 Fundamentals of Accounting, ACC 2010 Principles of Accounting I, and ACC 3400 Cost Accounting classes this Fall ‘24 term. She can’t wait to meet our MSU Denver students, hear their stories, and hopefully peak their interest in accounting, just like faculty and mentors did for her!
