Meet Monica Vargas!

Hi, my name is Monica Vargas and I am a senior at MSU.

Q&A with Monica

What does a typical day look like for you during the semester?
A typical day for me usually starts at 5 a.m. It sounds early, but I like to get a workout in first and then grab a coffee. I make it to class about 10 to 15 minutes early so I can settle in, get prepared, and be ready for the day.

What has your journey at MSU Denver been like?

My journey has been interesting. I got out of the military after serving for six and a half years, and it was a jump back in for the first time again, so it was very intimidating. But luckily, within my first few semesters, I met some incredible people and incredible instructors who were able to help me feel a lot more comfortable and more confident in my abilities. And so now we’re here.

What are you passionate about within business?

What I’m passionate about in business is being able to show not only other people, but other people in the military that their dreams and their abilities are far more than they can imagine. And being able to step outside of the military and back into civilian life is not as hard as they make it seem. You just need the right tools, the right people in the right environment to make it happen.

What are your future career plans?

What I would love to do is to be involved with MSU and continue being involved with MSU. I currently have my own business of planning local events to bring people together, and if I can do that with MSU, that would be the best opportunity that I can get myself involved.

What clubs, organizations, or events have you enjoyed the most at MSU Denver?

As far as events or clubs, I haven’t really gone to too many, but I will say that taking a professional flying class with Professor Clay Daughtry has probably been the best experience.

What advice would you give to new business students?

The advice that I would give is to interact with every person that you meet, especially in your classes. I’ve met some incredible people in class. I’ve also been able to learn more about people and grow my communication skills through that. And when you go through school, evolving and meeting new people is probably the best thing that you can do for yourself.

What’s something that you wish you knew before you started college?

Something that I wish I knew before I started college is that it’s not as hard as you think it is. It’s really just about making sure that you give yourself the right amount of time and the right opportunities and not be so intimidated by the idea of college, but more be excited about the experience of college.

What’s your favorite thing about being part of the College of Business at MSU Denver?
My favorite part would probably have to be seeing all the different people and all the different ideas that they have in the different fields that they’re wanting to go into, because I feel like you always have an opportunity to learn more about someone and also learn more about the environment that you’re in.
