Meet Madina Amiri

Hi everyone, I’m Madina Amiri, I’m studying finance here at MSU Denver, also minoring in accounting and political science. It’s my first semester and I am in my junior year, and I am really excited to be in the CBUS Ambassador program.

What does a typical day look like for you during the semester?
A typical day for me involves balancing academics, work, and personal life. I usually attend morning classes, which allows me to stay focused and productive early in the day. In addition to being a full-time student, I work as a Budget Office Assistant in the Office of the Vice President, where I help support financial operations. I am also involved in supporting a scholarship program, where I assist with organizing events and workshops for students and scholars, both on and off campus. Managing these different responsibilities has helped me develop strong time-management skills while staying engaged in both my academic and professional growth.

What has your journey at MSU Denver been like?

My journey at MSU Denver has been truly transformative. I came here from Afghanistan to Colorado and began rebuilding my life without knowing the culture or the education system. It wasn’t easy at first, but the experience has changed me in so many meaningful ways. I have learned so much and built strong connections with leaders across campus. I’ve had the opportunity to meet with the president several times, and she and her leadership team have been incredibly supportive of me. Because of that support and mentorship, I’ve been able to grow both personally and professionally while building strong, lasting relationships at MSU Denver.

One of my proudest accomplishments has been being selected for a Presidential Federal Internship Program, where I interned in the office of Senator John Hickenlooper and had the opportunity to meet with the Senator himself. I also attended meetings in Washington, D.C., which further strengthened my passion for leadership and public service. I am truly grateful for the support I’ve received at MSU Denver. Choosing this university has been one of the best decisions of my life, and I’m so proud to be part of this community.

What are you passionate about within business?
I’m really passionate about using business as a tool for social impact. I’m majoring in finance and minoring in accounting and political science because I want to have a well rounded perspective. I want to understand different areas and gain knowledge from many fields so I can see the bigger picture. My goal is to build that knowledge and then apply it in a way that creates meaningful impact through business.

What are your future career plans?
My future career plans include working at a finance company, possibly as a financial advisor, which is something I would truly love to do and hope to achieve one day. In the long term, I want to create an organization that supports Afghan and other refugee or immigrant women and girls outside of the United States who are denied education and live under strict governments without freedom. I want to create opportunities for them and help them access quality education. Right now, I live in the United States and have many opportunities available to me, and because of that, I feel a strong responsibility to help other girls and women who are seeking a good education but do not have the same access or support.

What clubs, organizations, or events have you enjoyed the most at MSU Denver?
I think CMEI was the best. They organize really great events, especially at the beginning of each semester, with lots of social and fun activities. We get free food, prizes, and T-shirts, which makes it even more exciting. These events are a great way to meet new students, connect with them, and even have lunch together. I feel that CMEI’s events are making a real impact by helping students build strong networks here at MSU Denver.

What advice would you give to new business students?

When I first started college, choosing a major was a really hard decision for me. I initially chose business management without really knowing what it involved. But after taking an Introduction to Business class, I realized that I was more interested in finance and accounting. My advice to other students is that it is okay to feel lost at first. College is the perfect time to explore your interests. Do not waste your time; take advantage of opportunities to talk with your advisors and professors, try different classes, and discover what truly excites you. Being unsure at the beginning is completely normal and can actually help you find your path.

What’s something that you wish you knew before you started college?

When I first came to the United States, I had graduated and spent about five months in high school here, but I had no idea how the education system worked. One thing I wish I had known is that there are so many resources available at MSU Denver. You just need to ask for help or any questions you have. At first, I did not realize that there are services to help with resumes, cover letters, and programs like Rudy’s Corner. There are also many events that help you connect with the community. By exploring, asking questions, and reaching out, I was able to communicate effectively and build strong relationships with other students and faculty.

What’s your favorite thing about being part of the College of Business at MSU Denver?
My favorite part of being a student in the College of Business is how supportive everyone is. Professors, advisors, and faculty are all incredibly encouraging, and it does not matter what cultural background you come from; they are here to help you. You just need to ask and show up. The College also creates many opportunities for students to get involved. For example, I am one of the College of Business Ambassadors, which allows me to lead programs and events, brainstorm ideas, and collaborate with other students. It is a great way to build community, have fun, and engage with the College of Business while learning and growing alongside others.
