A Look Inside the Role

I am in economics program in DC with the American Economics Association, that is designed to prepare our cohort for Ph.D. programs. I am taking graduate level coursework into Microeconomic Theory, Econometrics, and Math for Economics. My favorite part of the summer is the Research Methods course where I am getting to work on and share my research on adolescent exposure to substance use and arrest outcomes.

Growing Through Experience

I am learning a lot of math for economics. I am also learning coding software, soft skills in networking, and of course time management – completing 4 classes in 8 weeks along with a research paper. We have gotten to tour and learn about the federal reserve and we have gone to many seminars for all things AEA. At the end of the summer, I presented my poster board on adolescent substance use and arrest outcomes.

The Hiring Process: How I Landed the Role

Professors in the department were extremely helpful in sharing this internship with me and supporting me through the application process. After being here I’m realizing how many opportunities are available to undergraduate students and I’m incredibly grateful to my mentors that guided me here.

Words of Wisdom

I ended up in a place that was excited about my research goals. If you’re passionate about something, there’s probably a space where people already in the field are looking for you – it’s just about finding the right places that align with your ambitions. Talk to people in your department, ask where other students have spent the summer, and follow up!

Conclusion

I wish I would’ve started internships sooner! Not just for the resume building but because I’m truly enjoying the experience and I believe the connections I am making here will last far beyond this summer session.
