Marin Abell

Associate Professor of Fine Art

Art

Biography

Marin Abell grew up in coastal Virginia, earned his BFA in Sculpture from James Madison University, and his MFA in Sculpture and Expanded Practice from Ohio University. His sculptural practice engages his audience in ways that increases our awareness through dispelling the illusion of separateness.

Research Interests

I have a grounded approach to sculpture that examines local concerns surrounding historical contexts, and provides a platform for counter-narratives. My research often focuses on the areas of feminism, environmental sustainability, as well as honoring the past; and is manifested through installation art and performance art.

Teaching Interests

Through teaching I emphasize divergent thinking and encourage a different perspective on failure - one that rewards the search and generation of questions-worth-asking. I embrace new media, and with it, aim to fold traditional materials (such as wood, steel and plaster) and aesthetic values (such as scale, harmony, and duration) into newfangled zones. I often foster collaborations as opportunities to collapse boundaries and remind us of our interconnectedness.
