Teaching Interests

Meeting students where they are now and expecting progress creates the strongest results. Each student is on their own artistic journey. They each have different levels of exposure to theatre, science, technology, and psychology. Fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for students is important to me and for their growth as collaborative artists. I like to encourage skills development and critical thinking through hands-on learning. Students need a space to safely take risks, fail, and try again. This industry is a delicate balance between serious art and joyful expression, and anxiety over mistakes hampers creativity. Students need to build resilience to be successful. When students work with me, they can expect not only guidance and direction, but also the space and encouragement to seek answers themselves with room to make mistakes and try again. I feel that fostering an individual's independent curiosity opens doors to trying new things—challenging them to be independently curious and build problem-solving skills will contribute to their career success post-graduation.
In my experience, the most successful theatre artists prioritize collaboration. I believe training good collaborators begins with solid foundational training in all areas of theatre design and technology, combined with a holistic education in fields like art, history, and science. While students often focus on whichever area they are most passionate about, I encourage them to think about other areas and how others' work might intersect with their own.
