Metropolitan State University of Denver students have previously paid $15 to $30 per assessment for enhanced services available through ProctorU, but now all options will be paid by the University. Additionally, ProctorU services have grown, and faculty members should review the Record+, Review+ and Live+ tiers to determine which service, if any, is needed to proctor specific assessments. Given that the University will cover all ProctorU usage, faculty members should be judicious with when to use the Review+ and Live+ services, ensuring that the University can continue to pay this cost rather than pass it to students.

Student registration and equipment requirements

Students will access and schedule proctoring following the instructions for ProctorU Record+ Student FAQ and ProctorU Live+ / Review+ Student FAQ, but now all fees will be paid by MSU Denver. While there are not many use restrictions for students, they will still need access to a computer that meets ProctorU equipment requirements (note that Live+ is currently not supported on Chromebooks).

Student privacy

During the pandemic, concerns were raised by educators related to how virtual proctoring infringes on students’ privacy rights. The data collection and tracking practices of all technology companies are undergoing review by regulatory agencies and governments around the world. It is important to note that these practices are not unique to proctoring software; opening a web browser, using a camera or microphone, or talking to Siri or Alexa creates complications similar to using a proctoring tool. Given that many departments and faculty members say that virtual proctoring is necessary, MSU Denver will continue to use virtual proctoring services.

ProctorU is aware of this debate and has shared its privacy policy while also leading an effort to establish a Student Bill of Rights for Remote and Digital Work, which ProctorU and MSU Denver are devoted to upholding.

Determining which proctoring service is appropriate

When determining which proctoring service to implement, faculty members should use the service that meets their expectations without using an unnecessarily involved service. This will ensure the efficiency of the assessment and minimize cost. For information about best practices, when to consider using ProctorU and when not to use ProctorU, please review “Proctor Your Online Quizzes and Exams With ProctorU.”

To select the best service for an assessment, read the ProctorU Record+ FAQ and the ProctorU Live+/Review+ FAQ, then review the proctoring scheduling tutorial to schedule proctoring.

Informing students about assessment expectations

Students should be informed in advance that proctoring is required within a given course, and below is a template statement. More information and details about what to include in your syllabus are available on the Center for Teaching, Learning and Design Ready website.

Please make edits (describe preferred proctoring methods, remove those that are not an option, etc.), but note that some statement should be included in the syllabus of every course using proctoring and that sections using fully online instructional methods must offer at least one option between virtual proctoring and local proctoring in addition to Auraria Campus proctoring:

Proctoring is required to ensure the integrity of assessments within this class. Students will be able to choose from the following options:

  • Virtual proctoring through ProctorU
  • A proctor local to the student and approved by the instructor
  • Proctoring at the MSU Denver Testing Center
