A leadership-development tool created with employee feedback and piloted last year has been incorporated into this year’s performance-evaluations, which are set to open May 15.

The Leadership Competency Framework helps strengthen leadership skills at all levels and includes six competencies, which are behaviors and leadership capabilities that are directly tied to MSU Denver’s success.

Beginning with this cycle (2023-24), the competencies will be rated just like SMART goals and be considered as part of an employee’s overall performance evaluation.

  • Employees must complete a self-assessment for their SMART goals and competencies.
  • Managers will be asked to rate an employee’s SMART goals and the competencies using a five-point scale.
  • Competencies are the same for both employees and managers.
  • If during midyear conversations, employees and managers agreed to update goals, please be sure to submit them in Workday (if not completed already).

The performance management cycle at Metropolitan State University of Denver runs every year from July 1-June 30 and it’s the time of year when professional staff members should be thinking about the year-end performance evaluation process. Last year, performance evaluations moved to Workday to make practices more efficient and user-friendly for both employees and supervisors managing a team.

This year’s performance evaluations will take place in Workday from May 15-June 30 for professional staff members and deans.

Training and support

Training resources will be provided in April, including job aids and video courses. Live webinar sessions are also planned to help employees learn more about the leadership competencies and how to successfully manage performance evaluations in Workday.

  • Register for Performance Management webinars in Workday under the Learning app.
    • Tuesday, May 7 – 10 a.m.
    • Wednesday, May 15 – 1:30 p.m.
    • Thursday, June 6 – 10 a.m.

What employees can do now to prepare

  • Professional staff members and deans should review, add and/or update their SMART goals in Workday. Use the Annual Goal Setting job aids to learn how to enter and update goals in Workday.
