Every year, Metropolitan State University of Denver’s Undergraduate Studies works in collaboration with Community College of Denver and the University of Colorado Denver to invite two former members of Congress to visit the Auraria Campus and meet with students. This two-day visit is a great opportunity for students to engage the former Congress members in conversations about current issues and policymaking.

Former U.S. Reps. Claudine Schneider (R-Rhode Island) and Mike Capuano (D-Massachusetts) will visit the Auraria Campus on April 18-19. There are a variety of ways for students, faculty members and staff members to get civically engaged with these leaders.

  • Tuesday, April 18
    • 8:30-9:30 a.m.: Welcome breakfast (drop-in), Tivoli Student Union Room 320
    • 5-6 p.m.: Spill the Tea, Tivoli Multicultural Lounge. Come and join an open dialogue about how to work across the aisle.
  • Wednesday, April 19
    • 11 a.m.-1 p.m.: Tabling at Spring Fling with Denver Clerk and Recorder Paul D. López and the League of Women Voters.

On Tuesday, April 18, students, faculty members and staff members will have the opportunity to welcome Schneider and Capuano to campus and enjoy a simple breakfast in the morning or stop by the Multicultural Lounge before leaving campus in the evening for the Spill the Tea event. Both events are tri-institutional and are open to the campus community.

Request for a classroom visit

A large portion of the program includes spending time inside the classroom having conversations with students. Faculty members can request to join an existing Class Visit Session wherein Schneider and Capuano are prepared to discuss a variety of topics, including work/life balance, how to work in the public sector, details about congressional debate and how to run for office.
