Two Colorados: How we can get more students to — and through — college

Wednesday

4-5 p.m.

Colorado is a highly educated state, yet large gaps exist when it comes to which Coloradans hold a college degree. The gaps are greatest for students of color and those from rural communities. The panel conversation will explore the barriers preventing students, especially students of color or those from rural backgrounds, from getting to and through higher education. Students, experts and educators will also discuss opportunities for change, success stories that Colorado can learn from and potential solutions to address the “two Colorados.” The free event is hosted by Chalkbeat Colorado and Young Invincibles. Donations will be accepted.

Panelists include:

  • Will Simpkins, Ed.D., Metropolitan State University of Denver vice president for Student Affairs
  • Cecilia Orphan, Ph.D., assistant professor of Higher Education in the Morgridge College of Education, University of Denver
  • Nate Cadena, chief operating officer, Denver Scholarship Foundation

“Information for Foreigners” presents several examples of how authority can spin out of control in the search for total power. Guided by appointed “tour guides,” the audience experiences and witnesses the abuse of authority and violation of human rights. The play is presented by the Wheat Ridge Theatre Company in collaboration with production troupe Bucharest Inside the Beltway, which was founded by Cristina Bejan, Ph.D., affiliate faculty member in MSU Denver’s History Department.

Please note that the subject can be disturbing for some people. The audience is required to move from room to room, so comfortable shoes are recommended. Special accommodations can be made for audience members with disabilities (please send email in advance).
